What are your biases?

I was thinking about undue condemnation that pisses me off, such as the claims that Hollywood only represents a narrow female body type (that's for another thread) and the claim that the American media is a frothing mass of liberal bias. The latter came up as I was listening to the listing of Pulitzer recipients (for non-Yanks: that's the highest honor in Journalism over here), many of whom exposed corruption and led to convictions and reform in government.

This got me to thinking about bias in general. A good journalist doesn't claim to be "fair and balanced," they don't claim to report without bias as the Hearse newspaper empire did back in the day. They are honest about what their biases are.

So Escapists, in the spirit of that, what are your biases?

I'm biased in favor of science over mysticism in all its forms, biased against the extremely rich complaining about giving up some of their pie piece, biased against EA because I think they stifle creativity and homogenize the industry, biased against the overwhelming majority of what's been marketed as women's entertainment, and biased against most of the conservative leadership of the government here in the States.

Meh, I would say my ideal notion of a journalist doesn't let their biases into their writing, they simply tell me the facts without trying to tell me how I should feel about it, I'll come to that conclusion myself. I do realise that there are almost no journalists like this.

Personally I'm biased against anyone who would try to control information, or use it to control others. This ties in nicely with my second bias against anyone in significant positions of power, governments and corporations. I try to be fair and wait for evidence but I always expect it to go against such people or organisations.

I'm bias towards Canadian Hockey players.

The only reason I'm a Philadelphia Flyers fan is because last season they had the most Canadians on their roster at the time, and the Blue Jackets (I have a man crush on Rick Nash) didn't make the playoffs.

Go Flyers!

I'm not sure you can call that being biased when science is based on fact whereas mysticism is outdated superstition. It's not a bias if it's based on fact or legitimate reasoning, I don't think

OT: I try not to be biased against most things, especially music. I have friends who love one band even if they've not released a good album in years (one friend is a die-hard Papa Roach fan for no legitimate reason other than stubbornness) or hate another band because they have a negative image/fanbase etc.
I really can't think of any bias' which I have... heh

That's a good argument but I'm not sure I agree. Here I'm talking about just me and no one else so I feel I have the right to be as critical as I want - I rarely hold anyone to the same standards as I hold myself, not because I think I'm the tits but because I rest easier knowing that I'm not a hypocrite.

I guess it's fair to say it's technically not a 'bias' since it's a reasonable rejection or resistance, but I was simply stating that I usually reject any notion rather quickly, be it from a (pseudo)philosophical or a religious source, after I smell mysticism.
