Yeah, The Evil Within was Mikami, too. I used to have an unshakable faith in the guy, but Evil Within was so horrendously bad that having his name and studio attached fills me with more dread than hope.
I never tried Evil Within myself because it seemed like trying to do RE4 again. It seemed like some people dug it though.
I loved Evil Within, played through it like 3 times. RE4 is in my top 3 favorite games of all time and EW has nowhere near the polish, tight gameplay or brilliant encounter design of that game but it has an unmistakable charm to it with vivid imagination, neat horror movie hommages, dream like stage hopping, quirky offbeat characters and a tactical depth that makes every bullet count with cool splatter sounds that never loses it's sense of urgency. The production values resemble more an AA game, which ofcourse comes from lack of resources as Tango was just a newly formed studio and not a gaming behemoth like Capcom. I doubt many of Evil Within's ideas would ever find it's way in an established AAA studio though. EW resembles more a grindhouse horror, definitely an acquired taste but fans of the genre will most likely love it.

The sequel was technically better but didn't have the original's unique identity or imagination, and felt more like a cheaper version of more succesful games.

I think you and me are both big Resident Evil 4 fans, yet I always see you criticizing The Evil Within. Which is definitely an inferior game, but what exactly made it so appaling to you? I don't particularly care for the game but it was at least serviceable.
First of all it ran like crap. Not to be a spoiled brat, but when I play a PS4 game, even one that was ported from the PS3, I don't expect it to run like a PS3 game. There was texture pop-in in the first few seconds of the opening cutscene, and the framerate was stuttery as all hell. That was a really bad sign right there

The letterboxing actively hampered the game mechanics, since the interaction icons wouldn't show up properly because of it. I can't put my finger on it, but something weird was going on with that, like the game wasn't designed with letterboxing in mind and it was just added much later on. It felt like it was covering the game up rather than emphasizing the scope.

The shooting feels really not great. I don't remember too much of that, but I know it didn't make much of an impact on me.

Your guy moves really awkwardly and slowly, which wouldn't bother me too much if you weren't spending a lot of time running away from chainsaw wielding enemies that can kill you in one hit. Same with the weird 'run from evil danger' set pieces.

Enemies were placed throughout the environment in a manner that felt unintuitive and sloppy. It was hard to anticipate them, which might come across as me complaining the game was too hard, but I can deal with hard. What I can't deal with is when enemies just seem to show up without any indicator or clue in the level lay-out. It goes to show just how important and how much work developers put into giving the player just the right amount of signs to indicate an enemy is about to attack or that enemies are in the area. And this game just seemed to have none of that. And again, the letterbox (lack of sight) and slow movement only added to this frustration.

And lastly, the aesthetic was like something Silent Hill 1 throw up in the corner. It was so blatantly being HORROR with its barbwire and chainsaws it was kinda embarressing.

Now I never played too much of it, only two hours at most, so it might overall not be that bad, but those two hours were more than enough for me to never want to touch it again, or its sequel, which I have heard was actually a significant improvement. It does at the very least look well optimized, graphically anyway.

Only game I paid any attention to was CP2077. There is nothing of interest from Ubi, ActiBlizz, Squeenix or EA. I'm not interested in FO76. If Bethesda had said anything about TESVI I'd have been interested (and f**k them for leaving TES for 8 years already with no new game on the horizon). The recent announcement of BG3 is exciting, but wasn't at E3.

I am looking forward to Outer Worlds, although I'm undecided if I'll pick it up on Epic or wait for its Steam release. They didn't really show much for it.

The main issue really is that the big "AAA" studios no longer cater to me as a gamer. That's fine, I get it, not all games can appeal to everyone. But not even one? Not one decent game? The trouble with the way they publish now is that they make very few insanely expensive games, and this new trend to "live services" holds no interest for me. I want single-player, story driven games, or co-op action games, and there just aren't many of those now.

For cyberpunk I already pre-ordered the CE. It's the most I've ever spent on a single game (, not including a couple of MMOs I stupidly bought lifetime subs for). Some social justice types are trying to ruin it at the moment, but hopefully it will weather their hatred without caving.

I didn't follow much of E3, but Re-Logic announced Terraria 1.4.

Microsoft bringing more stuff to PC, so I don't HAVE to buy an XBOX. Thank you, take my money and just...Gimme Dat!
I heard my friends get the Game Pass and immediately started joking about dumbass subscriptions that just take your money for little value... then I looked at the games you can play with it for 5$/month. Holy shit that looks like a sweet deal.

Favourites:

CP2077. Admittedly if it wasn't for the link to the PnP I wouldn't be paying much attention to this, didn't really get on with the original witcher. But as it is, I want to see Night City visualised and be able to tour it's streets, even if it is 50 odd years later than I would have liked. I suppose it would have been a bit odd playing Cyberpunk 2020 in 2020.

Borderlands 3. Always liked the borderlands series, except the prequel which I haven't played. Will be waiting for GOTY edition though.

Watchdogs. Never played a watchdogs game before, but the location has me interested.

not really paid attention to anything else

Well, for what it's worth, by the time I played it there was an option to remove the letterboxing, so at least there's that. And maybe this is because I played it on PS3 but I didn't notice any more pop-ins than I was willing to tolerate.

Guy has that heavy, wobbly movement that AAA has adopted as standard because REALISM, which is annoying, fair enough. In my experience things start horrendously for combat/sprinting mechanics, then by rigorous upgrading end up... tough but fair. Felt like maxed-out Sebastian should've been starter Sebastian. As for the enemies, I don't recall placement but what I did find annoying was how erratic their movement was, so they might spot you stealthing up behind you because of their jerky animation or because there was no tell to when they would turn. About the only thing that gets decisively worse as the game goes on is the story. Just a dumb horror mashup extravaganza that doesn't conclude so much as stops.

Elden Ring. Curious about the lore and backstory GRR Martin created, and its the next major iteration of FROM games.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. I liked the freedom and detailed setting of Wildlands along with all the customization, and this looks to continue that while adding a bigger focus on stealth/survival tactics.

On the fence about Cyberpunk 2077. I want it to be good, but I probably won?t play it if it?s just ?big? for big?s sake. Maybe I?ll feel differently when I?ve at least gotten through The Witcher 3 and dlc.

Best - Astral Chain, Doom Eternal, and whatever else is on the top of the head.

Worst - Almost anything from Bethesda or Ubisoft
