The mods can be software or hardware mods. My favorite software one is the portal gun mod for half life 2. My favorite hardware mod is the Xbox and PS3 laptops made by benheck.

These are in no particular order and are all software mods:

The Steel Legion mod (Dawn of War)
Exaggerated Armies mod (Dawn of War)
Movie Battles 2 (Jedi Academy)
Fair Magicka Regen Mod (Morrowind-makes it actually fun to play as a mage!)
Neverhoodian's Awesome Mod (a private mod of mine for Star Wars: Empire at War)

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot one:
Dark Forces Mod (Jedi Academy)

Insurgency, a wonderful Source mod.

If anyone has a game using the Source Engine on Steam, look up Insurgency on Steam and download it.

In some sort of order:

- Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, Kobu's Character Advancement System, Unofficial Oblivion, Official Mods, and Shivering Isles Patches (TES4 Oblivion). Oblivion goes from a "good but not great" game to "all-time classic" with these mods installed.

- Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch (with Broken Steel fix). F3's great in vanilla---I've never felt the need for any major Fallout 3 mods---but the unofficial patch helps immensely.

- Age of Discovery II, by Dale (Civilization 4: Colonization). Makes "Colonization 2" much more fun by removing the emphasis on military buildup and turning it into more of an economic game, revealing a real strength in the process.

- Any mod that adds a bunch of weapons, armor, craftable items, and the like to a game, really.

No Helmet Hack, for Dragon Age.
A simple change that makes the game so much more enjoyable since I don't have to look at the horribly hideous head gear they put in that game. :D

I like the Apocalypse Mod for Left 4 Dead.. It's a server-side mod but even the creator(s) of the mod just forgot about it and realized Left 4 Dead 2 wasn't the devil's spawn. Then went to play all the games they bought in the Steam sale. So no one plays it anymore.

The bastards.
