Overrated: BioShock

Underrated: System Shock
BioShock catapulted onto the scene at a good time and, using some tried-and-true tips from System Shock 2, became a huge hit. I think SS2 would have done the same had it happened at the same time BioShock did. (Half-Life buried it, if I am correct.)
Still, I'm of the camp that SS2 is far better than BioShock, and I get a little sad inside every time some big gaming magazine praises BioShock and ignores its older brother.

Overrated: Gears of War series, Madden series, Grand Theft Auto series, Half-Life series, Team Fortress 2, Bad Company 2, Fallout 3
Underrated: Torchlight, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1-4, Golden Sun, Halo 2 (odd choice, but people really don't give this credit for what it started in online gaming. It made Xbox Live successful, single-handed.)

Overrated: Halo and Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

I read the thread title and predicted everyone would immediately say Halo.
They aren't wrong, the Halo series is slightly overrated - but only slightly. It doesn't deserve perfect 10s, which is what some sites give it. They're still damn awesome games though. I'd also like to nominate Half-Life 2 for, uh, overratation. Hooray for making up words!

Another underrated game is Deus Ex Invisible war. Yes it wasn't as good as the first one, but still better than most first person games. The areas may have been small and the game may have been too easy and short but at the same time the areas were much less linear than most FPS games. I also enjoyed the story even if it wasn't as good as the first one.
