Going through Ninja Gaiden, that game is almost impossible without using potions, same with Dragon Age and almost every game in existence. Call them healthpacks, fountains, painkillers etc. Latest would be Yathzhee's comment on the watercress sandwich in Demon's Souls
It's a long held traditional game item, but I think it's gotten a bit outdated. How does one drink a healing water and recover anyway?
How do we fix this 'problem'? Resting works for me, as do bandages.
Fighting games - no issue here
Rpgs - allowed, because it's 'magic'
FPS - already using the recovery time, this I interpret injuries as the 'probability' of you getting hit, so when you die is when you receive a fatal bullet wound.
Action games - ???
Platformers - ???
