This is a really tough one and perhaps the result will be totally different when i think about it nest time, but here are three of my favourites:

The Great Escape (all-time classic from 1963, i end up watching it every time it's on TV)
Tiger and Dragon (great martial arts, packed in beautiful pictures)
Miami Vice (gotta have a movie with some action, and i just love the atmosphere of the outside night scenes)

Edit: Just remembered, 'Tiger and Dragon' is just the german title (logic?), most of you will know it under 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'

Yes, to my great shame, I have yet to see this film, I love Sidney Lumet... I had a few opportunities to see it, and yet kept missing them consistently :(

I think I will buy the dvd today actually, and watch it :)
I'm sure you'll enjoy it, I wouldn't be embarrassed though. I can't recall how many times my brother told me to watch it before I finally did just to make him stop talking about it. I never thought I'd actually like a movie with Walter Matthau in it, but it surprised me.

The thread reminded me I also need to watch Das Boot again, and for anyone who liked Das Boot I would also recommend Stalingrad. I can't stress how amazing Come and See is though, it kind of ruined movies for me because it's so amazing and depressing at the same time. It's the only movie that I've watched where I said "That's the best movie I've ever seen, and I never want to watch it again." after my first viewing.
I see exactly what you mean. I have the same problem wih Dr. Strangelove... I mean, this film makes me cry inevitably everytime I see the ending, and I believe the song "We'll meet again" plays a good part in that, when you see all the bombs going off. So it's my favourite film ever, and yet I have difficulties in watching it till the end...
Actually Dead man also touched me on a very personal level, I couldn't really explain how or why... so it makes me feel very strange whenever I want to watch it again.

1. Black Hawk Down
2. Lord of the Rings: Trilogy (can't wait for "The Hobbit")
3. Pursuit of Happyness

I wanted to place Transformers and/or Saving Private Ryan somewhere in there, but there was no room.

Why 3?
Ok, I'll play.
-Lock, stock and two smoking barrels.
-Serenity (Firefly movie. Firefly is awsome).
-Shaun of the dead. (Tough call between that and Romeros Dawn of the dead).

Because otherwise it would have ended with everyone making humongous lists :p
And also, it's important to be able to make choices, however hard they are. Besides, it will only give more relevance to your choices ;)
