What comics should I read?

So in the last few months after catching up on the myriad of super hero movies I've missed out on (such as the Iron Man movies, Captain America, Thor and so on), I've gained a larger interest for comic books. I've read a few before, but I never found any story arcs or particular series worth sticking to.

My main gripe with comic books is that I can't read them if the art style isn't next to perfect. If something about the way it's drawn bugs me, I eventually can't be arsed to continue, regardless of the story. I found this particularly true when reading the Batman: Knightfall arc. I'm usually into the more detailed/stylish kind, like these:

So I was hoping that there would be a few comic connoisseurs in this particular neck of the Internet woods. Anyone got any recommendations on good series that have a particularly good art style? (The stories I've gained a recent interest for are the darker Batman stories, Amazing Spider-Man and the newer Nightwing comics, so I do have a few things to go by, but I was hoping to find some more.)

Marvel is about to do a big reset called Marvel Now. So pretty much every artist will be changing books in the next couple months. I'd check out the new Previews that hits on Wednesday to see if anything grabs you.

Calvin and Hobbes are my favourites, but looking at the topic methinks you're talking more about comics of the super variety and I know nothing of them sadly. Did read the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman and it was for the most part excellent. Most other comic series I've tried to read I haven't really enjoyed however.

I don't know what the comic scene is like in your area, but Gaiman is coming back with a new Sandman series, and if you aren't all that into the super hero stuff there is a TON of great stuff from the indie publishers...Image, IDW, Dynamite...if you have a nearby shop that is big into indie books (Comic Ink in Dublin, CA certainly is!) you can find some real gems....

Smoke & Mirrors
Locke & Key
Chew
Thief of Thieves
The Manhattan Project
Mind The Gap
The Magdalena

just to name a few...
