Definition of a sport-Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
Now I would like to know the opinions of the people on the Escapist as to what qualifies as a sport. I always thought that a sport was something like hockey or football. I personally think that NASCAR and WWE do not count as sports. The WWE because although it is a physical activity, it's choreographed. NASCAR I don't really see how it is physical since they are in a car for the entire race. I could see it technically be a sport because it's kind of an endurance thing. Anyway, I would like to know what everyone else thinks. Thanks.

Sport has become something beyond just physical. Get over the notion that sport=22 people running after a ball and sweating alot.

Edit: from wikipedia:

"Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determinant of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games with little to no element of chance) and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors"

Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. This is the important part. Burn it in your mind for the rest of your lifes.

Sport is a word and whether something is or is not a 'sport' should not be something so cared about.

discussed this a bit with friends.
i make 3 categories:
sport
exercise
hobby

a hobby is a competitive game which involves no physical exercise. so poker, snooker, darts etc

exercise is purely physical competition. no innovation, no skill, just technique, fitness and strength. this includes running, swimming, sprinting etc. the exception to this is something like long-distance running which does involve a little innovation, but it is still mostly fitness-orientated.

sport is a competitive game which includes a ball-like object, as in a shuttlecock or a rugby ball or even a frisbee. sport combines tactical and physical competition, and involves innovation and skill.

sorry that went on so long

No need for ball kicking....burn it in your mind now.

And here is a list of sports

Nascar is a pretty high endurance event. Just because they're sitting in a car doesn't mean they're not getting rocked around or boiling up. It like when people ask why I'm sore after I get back from snowmobiling. And WWE is some pretty crazy shit, You have to be pretty fit to do a crazy backflip slams. Who cares if its choreographed, so is synchronized swimming and that's an Olympic sport.

From Dictionary. com
-1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
Anything with a competitive nature is considered a SPORT in my opinion.

But do they rig the winners and losers in synchronized swimming? I don't think so.

Ya never know, how the hell do you decide a winner for solo synchronized swimming anyways.

synchronised swimming should be banned from the olympics. please don't use that as an example of sport.

The thing in WWE is that you need to be fit and know what you are doing, so you wont get hurt in the proccess. Sure most matches are rigged, but if you not physically prepared some moves can hurt you and give you plenty of injuries. Just try to do one of those submission moves to one of your friends and see how they scream out of pain.

The thing is the wrestlers are marked on their technique like in synchronised swimming, so the fact it is choreographed does matter...

Aren't there different wrestling promotions apart from WWE? I know there are ones that aren't rigged as well as rigged ones.

But yeah, WWE is rigged. It's a shame really.

I'd call anything competitive with fairly intense physical activity a sport, e.g. Rugby, Boxing, Lacrosse, Football, Wrestling(the not fake sort), basketball, tennis, mixed martial arts, etc. etc.

no they are all rigged, that's why it's called professional wrestling

it is a sport in that it needs a LOT of physical skill, just not the random outcome of real sports

probly why they call wrasslin sports entertainment
