What constitutes advertising?

So I've just had my first officially locked thread, based on the fact that it contained one of my own YouTube videos. Apparently this site has a very strict rule set regarding advertising (as well as basically everything else it seems).
But this isn't a bitching topic.

It actually got me thinking; posting my own YouTube video is apparently considered 'advertising', yet I'm not making any money off the back of it, neither is it a product as such. It's simply something I made and wanted to share with the world. So my question is really;
what is the difference between sharing and advertising?

This is a tough one, basically what happens is when a user creates a video series they then progress onto creating a blog with its own advertising space and try to get users here to move out onto their blog essentially taking ad views away from the Escapist, its happened a few times.

To be honest with you I'm not that fussed about having the topic locked, I've shut threads down myself for less. I was just interested to see the general population's view on this.

Blogs and your own works outside of this site are to be put on your profile only, so link your youtube channel on your profile, you know like linking your gamertags and MSN ID's, things like that.

Well yeah that is the rule, but what I'm asking is if you think that 'advertising' is the correct term for wanting to share something you made in a non-profit capacity.

Well yeah that is the rule, but what I'm asking is if you think that 'advertising' is the correct term for wanting to share something you made in a non-profit capacity.

Its the meaning that is bugging you?, advertising/self promotion is pretty much the same thing, with or without the monetary gain involved.

So stick your youtube channel link in your profile buddy, we have other bloggers here who stick to that rule and its not fair on them, also if all our bloggers did threads with their blogs we'd have a deluge of self promotion threads, which would make The Escapist forums a less pleasant to be because of the fighting for who can do the most threads about their blog.
