I just started replaying the first Deus Ex. The game is a shooter from the 90's and offered an amazing game that in some ways is better than any current gen. I think the multiple endings that came about because of choices in belief (e.g. a belief in a transcendant humanity vs. an anarchy) and the extreme amount of character powers and skill customization was amazing. It seems like people are impressed by Call of duty and it's RPG-lite system and Bioshock's choice system but pre-dating these games we had some really sophisticated works. Anyways this thread is not to insult the new but to bring up old game conventions that have not been duplicated or enhanced upon.

The one big one that I always think of is Homeworld 1 and 2. Those games were EPIC in size and scope. A space-based RTS with fill 3-d movement and real scale. The mods for that game are amazing also. Gundam mod anyone? Sins of a Solar Empire, while a similar game, doesn't make the 3-d aspect important enough.
this video shows the game much better than I could ever put into words.
