Emo is a funny term in that, if you can class yourself as one, then you probably aren't one.
What I'm saying is that, there's proper emos, and there's the people who just adopt the style and claim to be one.

It's more the way of thinking than anything that defines an emo.
I think.
I think the people who say they are emo have a whole new thing called "scene." Now I'm not in HS, but from what I've heard it's quite retarded.
No, I think scene is the opposite end of the spectrum: overly hyper, extremely upbeat happy kids, wearing a vast array of neon colours, giving out "free hugs" wherever they can.

Emo originated, I believe, from a branch of punk rock music, with bands like Hawthorne Heights and Dashboard Confessional; bands with a punk sound but very dark and emotional lyrics. The punk style was originally a black mop top, dark clothes and sweater vests which was coined by the (mind-blowingly incredible) punk band 'Refused' who are by no means emo, but the emo trend adopted it
Emo branched out until fans of bands like MCR were considered to be emo (though the band themselves are not, I personally love their eariler albums)
So now emo is just any whiney little teenage/tween ***** who wears black and acts like a total pussy
How in the hell it transgressed from punk rock, the grittiest, most violent and angry form of music to teenagers wearing eyeliner and cutting themselves is completely beyond me. It baffles the mind

Emo is music based subculture born from Emotive hardcore (shortened to Emo) usually taken as meaning someone overly emotional but a more correct way to put it is that Emo's put their emotions on display hence emotive.

Has bascially nothing to do with the Goth scene which tends towards not displaying emotions but rather being quiet and inwardly reflecting and is otherwise a splinter subculture from the Punk scene of the 70's and so even musically is extremly different to emotive hardcore.

What sort of emo do you have in mind tho ?

The term as it is originated from 80ties hardcore-punk that evolved into emocore in the infamous United States.

In current times the term went through several changes and currently is quite widespread from music through lifestyle all the way to very vague term for anyone thats whining about silly things on the internet.

As for myself, i use this term to describe the 'subculture', partially created by MTV on other mainstream mass media, of kids that despite their families good (often above average) material and social status, due to lack of real issues make a big deal of their supposedly unsuccessful emotional life, and go on how nobody understands their pain and how their souls are hurt by the unforgiving world they were punished to live on.
Its one of those subcultures i have very little respect for, because they don't really represent anything except their attention whoring.

Sadly, for false reasons, the term is often associated with gothic subculture, while majority of goths i do know are among the most positive people i've met. Only emo-goths i've encountered were all those teenage bois and girls climaxing at the slightest mention of Nightwish and Evanescence which they consider the very essence and pinnacle of gothic music and art.

I blame you America, for breeding such abominations :p

It's wearing black, cutting yourself to relieve the pain of living a relatively easy life in a quiet suburb with your well meaning parents, stupid hair cut, unnecessary piercings, and generally being a total chode.
That made me laugh my ass off, especially the bit about the quiet suburb and well meaning parents... well done to you :D

So... does that mean the kids in Skinz are Emo-Scenesters?

I wouldn't say that an emo can be measured by the way he or she looks but more like the way he or she acts. It is someone who is overreacting on something that for most people seems quite trivial or not even worth to bother but for the emo is a big deal. Maybe it's because they need attention or see things in a different proporion as most people do. I must admit that sometimes I read things and think: oh boy, if that's really your biggest problem or reason to be sad, don't get me started. But then again, there is no reason to undermine another persons feelings and just carry on because for them it can be equally painful as some experiences are/were for me. (... we are talking about that strange bird here.. right? :p)

Extreme boredom, conformist mentality and the delusion that everyone cares about your choice of style.

Kinda. I would put them more as chav-scenesters, but you've got the idea.

Oh you didn't just confuse them two people, please.

OT: Emo to me is just the pussy version of Goth. Poser's/ Wannabe's of their darker brethren.

What is with people and Chris Tucker here? rofl....
Anyway, emo is when some kid (usually someone who thinks their life is much worse than it is) that decides to dress in all black and pretend they genetically are part wolf.

What I don't get is that it stems from this emotionally hardcore music type thing. I listen to a lot of emotional music, my favorite pieces are Chopin's Nocturne No13 Op 48 in Cm which is I believe about grief and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata which is absolutely about unrequited love does that make me an emo? :(

I will draw upon a wonderful forum post I once observed members of the Something Awful forum community mocking by reading aloud like beatnik poetry.

*Ahem*

Emo is emo is emo, you just know it. Kind of like water - you just know that it's water and you don't really have to question it. It's emo.

I think the wolf part is more furry based...

Also don't forget androgynous. Their dudes looks like chicks, and their chicks look like dykes...

Oh and Chris Tucker.

people who have emotional problems and whine about it alot= emo in my dictionary.
(whining is not equivelant to talking about it.)

people who wear black are not emo, people who listen to emo bands are not emo, people whocut themselves may not be emo, mostly atention whoring.

"emo" is short for "emotional". anyone that's an emotional bruding git = emo. be it lashing out at society by looking and acting like an... well emo, crying over stupid shit that everyone else deals with like "life's not fair" or just being an over-all pansy *****. but then again I haven't been in high school for quite some time and words tend to change meaning (gay = happy... i mean, homosexual... i mean, douche-bag... i mean, Harley rider...) so at this point i could be wrong, but for me this is the definition of emo.
