I like Spore, though too bad, due to I only plays pirated copy of one likely because of DRM screws up anyone that plays this game legally, I can't joins MySpore feature(the only thing that allows me to records any Achievements) and due to increasing unlikelihood of getting "Front Page News" achievement, I gave up making original things, so that's why I prefers Mega-Crossover over making anything Original(though this risks me of making my works anything except commercial)

oh yeah, here's my own Playthrough of Spore: in Cell Stage, I makes my creature Omnivore from having both Herbivore and Carnivore mouths, in Creature stage, I befriends creatures more than exterminates them, in Tribal Stage, I be friendly(since it will makes the Grox won't shoot me when I goes into their territory), in Civilization stage, I become Economic, and in space Stage, I become Diplomat Empire where this Archetype is one of few Spore Archetype that didn't hate the Grox, I makes friend as much as I can with Spacefaring empires before I makes Grox my friend(this makes everyone else in Spore galaxy betrays me) though the ever present Space Pirates are the most annoying thing in Space Stage, and at some point after the Grox become friend with me, the Grox simply betrays me at some point after the Spore universe(at least in this playthrough) got destroyed under unknown circumstance where the Grox joins inter-dimensional coalition of devilish aliens in my Crossover Project

The consensus so far is that Spore failed to deliver on any of it's promises, and was shallow and two dimensional in the important parts (such as space, primarily)

HOWEVER...

Apparently someone else has decided to take a crack at the Spore formula (Sporemula?)

It's a little indie project called Universim: https://theuniversim.com/

From what I can see it focuses mostly on only the Tribal/Civ/Space stages, which are the actually fun parts. I know as soon as I get paid I'll be investing in this project. I only hope it doesn't go th e way of all those other kickstarter indie projects that release half-finished.

I pretty much called it before release. Only got to try about 2 hours of it, but that was about enough.

No gender dimorphism, very limited specialization/evolution - pretty much everything you create is pretty much equally effective at everything - I remember there were some kind of attack/charm bonuses for different body parts, but it all devolved into a meaningless clusterfuck.

Um, yeah. Another one of those games that got 10/10s accross the board and then nobody had anything to say about it a month later.

What we got was 4 lazy and extremely shallow mini-game copies of various games/genres (with the possible exception of the cell phase, which is fun) that completely lacked in depth and one big, lazy and extremely shallow game that also lacked in depth and was boring as hell on top of a rather good creation engine.
Cell phase is an almost by the numbers rip off of a fantastic indie game called flOw, released two years prior. If you look at the old ZP of spore, yahtzee actually mentions it in image form.

I'll echo what many others have said. It was/is a fantastic idea that didn't pan out the way everyone wanted. Honestly though you would need a fallout/skyrim sized game to make it into that kind of thing and I don't think they ever had that option. It would literally need to be four or five full sized games strung together to be what they promised.
