This is really my first tactical RPG i have ever played as I was not really into fantasy shit when Baulders Gate was released. I started Dragon Age on normal and found that the first few fights were really hard and i was having to pot a lot to stay alive. However I battled through the first boss fight in the tower dying at least 7 times before killing him. As i continued to play I learned the tactics around managing an entire party and began to get comfortable with the pause menu and queuing up attacks. For some reason I never really thought to switching to easy even though several reviews suggested noobs start on easy. However, it does give me a sense of achievement when I finish up a quest after really having to battle through the areas. I can't even imagine what the game would be like on nightmare.

Playing on Normal for now, I'll try harder settings after I finish the game at least once. However, the game is fairly challenging. It's not hard in an unfair way, if you get your arse kicked it's always your own fault. If you are smart about your ability usage and positioning, most fights can be won handily. My guess would be that the difficulty complaints are mostly related to the console version (where you can't zoom out and plan your next move), or that many players aren't used to this kind of tactical gameplay. Let's face it, if your idea of an RPG is Oblivion, Dragon Age is a bit of a paradigm shift to say the least...

I've ran a few characters through the early game (no further than the first town) to get the feel for the game. I've finally settled on an Elven Mage and I'm actually considering increasing the difficulty. Some of the spell combos are so good they are almost broken. Sleep + Horror = Massive damage AND Crowd Control. Also, Cone of Cold + Walking Bomb + Offensive Spells to detonate bomb can clean entire groups VERY fast.

Nightmare. Difficulty is all over the place. Some fights i can finish by right clicking on the most threatening looking target while looking for teammmates doing retarded pathing and little else, other times i'm annihilated by a pack of dogs in about 10 seconds.

Well I was playing normal then I hit that damn Ogre on the tower and I failed...epicly.

My rogue sucks...going to try a Mage or something.

if I am getting it, I'll put it on the hardest, I like a challenge.

Lol normal is actually quite a challenge. Ive been playing a rogue which might be a little harder to play then a mage but still, im impressed normal gives me this much of a fun challenge. Im loving this game so far. Will keep me quite entertained until the next really good game comes out, so probably like 3 to 4 months.

Just backstab it!

That is the entire point of a rogue after all.

OT: I intend to play normal when I get the game, as I don't like challenging myself too much and I would feel bad for playing easy. I do just like owning stuff with massively overpowered things though...

I would say play it on normal then because most of the fights are pretty manageable and then if you get stuck on a spot change it to easy to beat the fight and hop back. I dunno how easy the easy setting is but its probably a lot more manageable then normal.

I'm playing on normal for now, but on my second run through I'm gonna play on a harder difficulty level.

I'm playing Dragon Age: Origins on Normal difficulty, but it feels a lot harder than what I'm used to.

I know! But I fail at playing it...I was having more fun using the noone mage and that Grey Warden dude..Alistair me thinks. Even the War Dog was more fun.

I think the scale of difficulty is screwed up, on a 1-10 scale

Easy - 3

Normal -8
Hard -9
Nightmare - 10

Either that or it depends on your party at the time, people who don't want to read will have more trouble knowing what does what.

Casual. I'm in it for the story and Normal is ludicrously hard. I can usually win fights, but only after three of my party are dead...

I'm in it for fun and the story.

I started on normal but in the swamp the friendly AI just went and lee royed everything, aggro'd like there was no tomorrow.

A combo of normal and easy.

I can do normal, its really challenging, but some fights I have been in such horrable positions and my party selection was the worst for the situation.

And I barely won those fights by the skin of my teeth on easy.

Now I keep a mage in my party at all times.
