So, in between all of my school work and other things that keep trying to distract me from more important issues, I've been working on a novel for about a year now. It's almost finished and, acting on the advice from some publishers at a writer's conference I went to last September, I've decided to try and use social networking to get people aware of it in the hopes of gathering some followers and using that to help persuade publishers to take a risk on my work.
By all this, I mean I made myself a LiveJournal page about it. http://dgcnews.livejournal.com/2010/06/17/
But the thing is, I'm not very familiar with this kind of thing. The guy in charge of the panel said that you have to have a large number of followers to turn any heads (I think his estimate was 10,000) and, frankly, I don't have the slightest clue how to go about it. I've linked the page to my DA account and now I'm posting here in the forums in a sort of gratuitous self-promotion that only everyone and his dog is capable of.
Of course, that's not all. What I really hope to gain out of this besides possibly a few followers is a little information. Was Live Journal a good choice for this? That would probably be my biggest question. The other is how the hell does Live Journal work? I've been doing some searches over the past couple of days trying to find other writers, or communities of writers and so far I think I've only really found one. I say "I think" because my searches seem to have this weird tendency to turn up pages that are totally in Russian. I also can't seem to find out who's in charge of the site, who I should contact there with questions, or, believe it or not, a damned FAQ page. If this is a sink or swim endeavor here, I'm going down like a lead brick.
So, can anybody help out? Or is this completely the wrong place to be asking?
