Try not to think about the in-game economy. Despite almost every single pre-war building being a treasure trove, people supposedly struggle to survive, and merchants have magic access to unlimited stores of food - it's never explained where it's produced, of course. Weapons are produced in The Pitt, and that's where the slaves go, but overall there's very little convincing explanation given as to just how the post-nuclear world actually works.
Indeed. It's unfortunate as these kids of things being explained would be very good at helping to set the atmosphere, something that Bethesda is apparently not very good at doing.
I think it takes more than that to label Bethesda as bad at that. They also are working on a universe they did not create. Nothing ever made it seem like they were bad at it in the TES games.

I thought they did all the interior designing.

no thats the bloody mess perk
That is just for painting. Someone had to set up all those tables and staues.

And after a bit more research I have come up with a better theory. Those random slaves we bumped into during our travels we weren't supposed to see. The slaves were supposed to run into any town where we got a bit trigger happy and smooth things over for us. That is why it always takes 3 days before people forget. Thier hidey hole is located exactly 2 and a half days from any settlement. They need the other half day to talk to everyone on your behalf. One especially smart slave's only job was to hide in Megaton and fix Deputy Weld anytime he got exploded. And I know they had alot of slaves under the Rivet City bridge to turn it for us.

I would have benefited from a mention of video games/FO3 in the thread title. Just a funny thought, hehe.

(Resists urge to make unkind remark regarding slavery) I dunno, but they still had all those folks in Paradise Falls holed up. I assume there must be at least some interest around the area for slaves. Maybe Tenpenny Tower recruits them every so often for maintainence and then quarters them somewhere where the local residents don't have to see them.

In fallout 3, raiders attack places, super mutants also attack places and turn people into mutants, and slavers enslave people. But what do the slaves in fallout 3 do? I only know one thing that women do in it. So what do the slaves do?
Alright a few things: First of all, super mutes' dont make people into mutants, they kill them. Super mutants are made when they are exposed to the FEV virus in vault 87, or when two super mutants reproduce (mentioned by Fawkes as well the vault's terminals.) Second, The slaves are used for many things: forced labour, body guards, ect. But most slaves are sold to the raiders in The Pitt, where they are used to run the foundries and collect steel.

Few problems there: one, super mutants can't reproduce. Physically impossible. It's how you can convince the Master in Fallout 1 to kill himself by showing him evidence that, as a race, the super mutants are doomed.

To follow on from that, two, as the super mutants know that they can't easily reproduce, they have to take prisoners to turn into super mutants by subjecting them to the FEV.

Third...please, don't type your PIN number into an ATM machine, you may end up with the HIV virus...
