This is a simple topic, but one I think is very important.

We all know the world can be a very messed up place, what with war, poverty, hunger and all the like. With the recession alot of countries are struggling to cope. So I have a simple question, what do you do to make the world a better place? Do you volunteer anywher? Go out of your way to help strangers? Whatever it is, let's hear it here =]

Me, all I try to do is to be a good and nice person. Kindness can go a long way.

Like you I try to be as kind as possible, I do a fair bit of recycling and reusing as well, if that counts.

I'd say my main thing though is my plan to go on a month long trip to do aid work in Mongolia with World challenge in 2012. Problem is I need to raise £4000.

If anyone here has any spare cash lying around I'll haul it away for you......

Of course. It doesn't matter how little your contribution is, just matters that you try.

I'm always willing to listen to people's problems, I just never know what to say to them.

Uhh, I let an old man in front of me in a grocery line ..he said thanks. Local hero helps elderly man.

Recycle, volunteer when I can, and help various local businesses (for free) get a general presence online, or atelast a grasp of it.

My mother's a cancer survivor. When she was in treatment we joined a volunteer group offering support to fellow patients. The whole family has been involved ever since.

Uh, I don't think I do much.
I recycle most of what I have (though I hear for most things besides metal it is actually more energy consuming.)
And I walk to most places instead of taking a car, or if I absolutely can't walk I take public transportation.

Fuck making the world a better place. The world ain't gonna change.
If everyone thinks like that, then the world will never change. The world can change, there's just no instant magical solution. You have to be the change you want to see in the world.. Just do whats in your power to help.

I've donated more money to charities this year than I should have. But only to the ones that get 100% of the donations.

I'm also usually just a nice and helpful person.

I try to be nice and helpful, generally. And I recycle I suppose. Is this the bit where I wheel out the fact that I work in cancer treatment research? Cos I've always disliked the way some people I've worked with have wheeled that one out at every possible opportunity to stroke their own egos.

I don't do anything consciously to *holds back of hand to forehead dramatically* save the world. But I do try to do my best to lead a positive, creative existence.

No no man, don't misunderstand me, I'm not telling you to stop being good or anything. I just don't think you should do things for the purpose of "making the world better". Ever heard of "moral balancing" or "compensatory ethics"? Not that I'm accusing you of doing it or anything, but I think we should be doing good things for us, not for "the world". If doing good makes you feel good, great, let's leave it there. Once we introduce grand idealogies into it, we run many risks.

For example, this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/mar/15/green-consumers-more-likely-steal
Alright, sorry if I misunderstood you. It's just when people say the world can't change, it's irritating to hear. Because it's that attitude which will hold them back.

And I'm not trying to help for the sake of helping, I genuinly think that someone should be trying to make people care more, and help each other. And from what I've seen and realized from this world, is you can't really rely on other people. So I do what I can.

Well, I try to donate money sometimes if I have some to spare, and I will help the occasional stranger, even if I have to go out of my way. However, my big helping point, or at least I like to think, is keeping manners and politeness alive. So many people today don't care about manners or being polite, they would rather get to where they are going instead of holding a door open, or saying please and thank you. I try to keep those ideas in my life all the time. It most definitely has made me a better person.
