All that matters:

50% gameplay
50% replayability

I don't think it would be possible for me to care less about graphics or sound. As long as they are 'acceptable', then the game is fine. Acceptable this gen equates to:

Skate
Rock Band
PixelJunk games

As long as they are of that standard this gen, I'm fine. They don't need to be pretty. They need to get the point across. I mean, I still play Nethack and Diablo 2.

Gameplay- Obviously the game itself has to be entertaining and keep me interested. The control scheme needs to feel natural, and not some overly complicated scheme, where you need to take a correspondence course before attacking an enemy.

Story- I can forgive a slightly bad game play if the story draws me in and keeps me playing to simply see whats happening to our beloved heroes next. or vice versa, if a story is slightly bad, I can overlook it for good game play

Graphics- IT depends on he type of game. If its an rpg, I expect to have my eyes burning slightly due to the beauty of the area around me, and during cut scenes. But if its fps or rts, whatever as long as I can tell it's his head I blew off, or that's his town center I just destroyed its fine.

Linearity- It doesn't' have to be an open world game, but it can't just be a straight line from the bad guy's lair, from your house. Kinda like mass effect. Linear story, but there are a lot of side quest mini stories to do to distract you from the main story, or like oblivion, once the main story is completed, there's still a lot to do.

Comedy- I'm surprised no one has said this yet. I can forgive a lot of things if it's really funny. Psychonauts was funny in an odd way,, which made me love it just that more. This is also why I'm looking forward to Brutal legend. I'm sure the game itself will be okay, but its the comedy part that it promises that intrigues me.

story - story has to be original, in fact any game where the words "space marine" and "the main character doesnt speak" come in to play are almost always avoided. i also hate characters that are overly badass and super muscular, which is why half life was cool. overall though, the characters have to be likeable.
You hate games where the main characters don't talk, yet half life was cool for you? Something seems...odd about that

I'm confused as to why you continue to dodge the question, but fine...

what in a game makes you realise that your 40 buks was well spent?

personally, i dont care about 'scores' and breaking dont thinks into percentages, because no one should take them seriously. there are games that can be really repetitive/boring that i only played for the storyline, and there are other games i played because the gameplay was good even though there was major problem with something else. its urksome to see people give scores, its trivial and no one really thinks about them too deeply, in EGM magazine when they review games, people either flip to the review they want and base the entire game on that, making them biased idiots; or they ready the whole thing and barly glance at the score.

i say throw away the point system and break down games into "play it, rent it, reject it" this is what people do in the first place anyways, class as reject it
1-4 out of 10 (1/5,2/5) = a moldy dish sponge, class as reject it
5-6 out of 10 (3/5) = a decent game, class as rent it
7-10 out of 10 (4/5,5/5)= the cat pajamas, class as 'play it'

obviously you can study it till your hair is grey, normally i'd take such scientific method, but its a game, its ment to have fun! dont pick it apart, be fast and precise, and above all, dont make any ur mom jokes about a game, or anyone in fact, they're old and they need to go away.

my best way to review a game is ask your self is this fun to me? (emphasis on 'me') and if it isnt trade it in.

alright i'll give in since you put up a GREAT fight

Sharp control allowing fluid gameplay

a good purpose (story isn't everything e.g. Crash Commando)

Technically Good Graphics this means a Good no wait infact a Superb frame rate
with no pop-in and objects don't go into other objects unless their supoosed to

Graphics that are fun to look at e.g. Killzone or Prince of Persia both Oppisite because one is realistic the other is arty but their both eye candy

worthy Replay value

and most of all !!

DUN DUN DUN

the game makes me realise that my 40 bucks was well spent !

I like a game when either:

1. It's completely replayable. Something like LBP fits into this - constant streams of new levels and I don't see myself getting bored of it any time soon.
2. The ending is fantastic. Something like Portal or Metal Gear Solid 4 - I wouldn't want to replay either, but the experience I had with both on my single run of them was enough.

With gameplay, I like the game to be fun, basically. I can overlook the odd glitch if it's not a game-breaker, and I don't mind a little repetition if it truly is just a little.

Graphics, I don't care, although having really awesome things like shiny surfaces and photorealistic surfaces is nice. As said, though, I won't be disappointed if a game's graphics are substandard.

Sound, not a problem. If sound effects annoy me, I turn them off and think no more. If a soundtrack holds a lot of songs I don't like (eg "skate."'s hip hop) I turn the music off and play some lovely indie rock from my computer (conveniently beside my TV).

Story. I love a good story in a game, but would rather have no story to a boring, bloated one. Something like Mirror's Edge is also fine because there's only a small story, but it's entirely skippable and the game can still be enjoyed fine without it.

Overall, I guess the main thing I look for in a game is that I'm going to get my money's worth out of it, and for that, nothing's better than it just being fun.

I've been giving it some thought and i've found a few things i like that dont quite fall into my original percentages.

1.)Haveing to use you brain and not just your reflexes. Hence why i like stratagy games (real time or otherwise).

2.)Some ammount of customization. I don't know why but I love charicter creators.

3.)A sence of accomplishment. I like getting all the un-lockables, i don't really know why.
