What do you name your RPG custom character?

Depends on the game. Sometimes I'll do cool names, sometimes fun names... sometimes even offensive names.

Naming you main character something that doesn't fit the setting very well can be pretty funny. I named the protagonist in Persona 4 "Rufio Alfonzo" because it doesn't at all fit with Japanese naming conventions. Characters call me things like Rufio-kun. Lol.

It's pretty much this for me as well. Depends on the game and the mood I'm in.

Except they called me Olaf-kun. Yes, Olaf Kjerrulf, Danish exchange student extraordinaire and saviour of Inaba.

Shae Di: Breton female thief

"Shae" means admirable, which fits her charismatic demeanor, and "Di" means divine, which matches her status as the Dragonborn.

And of course, you put those two together, you get a name that sounds like "shady", which fits her class as a thief.

Remus: Imperial male Warrior

"Remus" means founder of Rome, suitable for an Imperial character. I made him look like Russell Crow from the "Gladiator" movie.

Usually I try and come up with a name that suits the character, the setting, and/or the game's mythos. If I can't come up with something or if none of those things are applicable I just go with Gotthew.

On my first play through of a game, I use my name for dudes and Rayne (pronounced like Renee) for chicks. After the first playthrough, I start getting creative. For example, my second character in Skyrim was named Dick Buttkiss, and my character for My Player mode in NBA2K12 is named You Suck.

My evil Fallout 3 character was called Electra. Which was pretty funny since she had enough daddy issues to nuke a town. Literally.

Good characters tend to be called Rose or Tiana. (Atrus' grandma from the Myst games.)

If I'm a male like Link or Cloud or whoever they will be called Charlie.

You name all your female characters differently, but all the males characters after your own name? I don't know if there's more to that than meets the eye ;P

I'm not entirely sure what it means but it's probably something psychological . Either that or it's because I think the feminine version of my name sounds like I'm about to have tea on the lawn with Mr Darcy.

I always think it's weird when people called Link by his proper name, he has been Charlie since Link to the Past for me.

I usually have a female character named "Soran" in just about every RPG I play, and my main Khajiit characters in all the Elder Scrolls games I've played have all been named "Nihil." Otherwise, most of the names I use are either completely unique or based off of a random character from another work.

I try to come up with something that doesn't have numbers, two xx's before and after, capital letters in the middle of words. I try to make something funny and original. My Runescape username is Shaved Apple. My Arcanists username is Silky Ox. My playsation username is Falletio.

I'm quite boring with this. Usually I'll just go with Andy for single player games or frobalt if it's online.

As it weird as it might sound for some of you, I don't find the name that important. I'm not saying that in a condescending way, just so I'm clear.

If you're wondering why, it's because I don't associate the role playing aspect with actual role playing, I associate it more with personal character growth. IE: The levelling up system which makes a character stronger.

In fact, without going into too much of a ramble, I love the system of levelling up as I find it can add depth to pretty much any game, even if it's not your typical role playing game. For instance, GTA would work with a level up system. Potentially. I'll not go off on a tangent though.
