Realism - Normal is the way to play.
Realism adds that extra bit of challenge. But normal retains the fun factor. Also, i don't know about your experiences, but playing on easy i always found myself with a group of 3 people without a mic who were worse than the bots.

Sometimes it can be very easy, even on higher difficulties but then there is that moment when a jockey grabs me at the least opputune time and #%%^ #&#$* $#$* MOTHER #$&##(%

...but it a good way

If you have the right teammates the game isn't too bad. I certainly agree that the difficulty did increase though. Public games are not recommended, not just because of the inconsistency of your teammates skills but it also seems to take ages to fill up a lobby. When I have to play public I just get impatient and start the game hoping someone will join while I play.

So far we've beaten every campaign on advanced. Haven't gotten around to doing the same on expert yet since League of Legends has been eating up most of our gaming time.

It's fucking punishing, but in a really good way. It never feels cheap.

Realism on Expert is death incarnate.
I probably died in 5 minutes when I tried that.

I think it's incredibly difficult due to no one on XBL having any idea what they're doing. Seriously, I had a group that couldn't get passed the first part of the first campaign on easy.

Well if there were only normal zombies, I would breeze through everything on Expert, but alas - we have the specials. I definetly think Normal is challenging, but only when - as you say - the special infected come in and rip me to pieces.

its a much appreciated difficulty!
makes you fulfilled when you finish a campaign or just do really well on one of them. And it never really has been difficult to the point where I want to stop playing out of frustration. But then, I try to keep the "this shit will not beat me" mentality to games

Surprisingly difficult, even on Normal.

I have to say, the "Incoming Attack!" music is actually getting on my nerves. It's like the Director, rather than simply spawning hordes whenever he gets bored, has simply fallen asleep on the "SPAWN HORDE" button. Also, Tanks showing up the minute the rescue vehicle arrives. I got incapped literally a FOOT away from the helicopter during the concert finale.

The AI controlled characters seem to be even dumber than in the first game. I jumped over a fence and got pounced by a Hunter, which almost KILLED ME (from almost full health, mind you) because everyone else had to take the long way AROUND the fence.

And Hard Rain. Just...Hard Rain...

But I still like the game. I just need to work up the nerve to even *try* anything higher than normal difficulty...

Yes, it is definately more difficult than the first, but I think it adds to the pull of the game's "survive a zombie apocalypse with your friends" concept. I was actually out of breath after barely managing to survive swamp fever today XD
