To me noob is the one who throw hissy fits when you kill them, use the cheapest tactics and are under the delusion they are they are actually good when they suck. They may or may not be new. I don't really use the term tho.
Newb is someone who is inexperienced.
It doesn?t really have any meaning now anyway. People seem call anyone they don?t like a noob.

I would say someone who recently started gaming and even after an extended period of time they still are horrible. that is when I call them noobs.I call my non-gaming friends noobs. but only when they so bad it is not even funny.
I have other names to call them anyway.

Like others, I define between a Newb(ie) and a Noob. I'll also add n00b in there as a third definition though.

A Newb is genuinely new to the game, genre or gaming in general. They have no idea what to do, or may have some limited idea from whatever single player/tutorial a game may have. They are the reason I believe that all games for every genre need excellent beginner/tutorial sections. These people generally want to learn, and while I'm happy to teach, thats the developers job.

Noobs are people who are new or inexperienced but have a particular mindset whereby they think the game should either be something it is not, that people should carry them through, or refuse to learn the way the game works. These people rarely last long.

A n00b is the same as the noob, but these ones do last long. They are people who have either never learned to play, been carried through content by their friends, or played for a long time in a game such as an MMO and refuse to adapt to changes to the game. They are also almost always obnoxious in their treatment of their fellow players.

I personally don't call people noobs because I think that it is a little childish, but I was just wondering what people who did think is a good definition of one and I think a gaming site is the best place to ask this question.

I am not looking for a dictionary definition.
I think the term "noob" is used for people who can't adapt, every day is like the very first one they are playing the game, with their incompetance and inabillity to figure things out becoming annoying to other players.

I'm one of those people who will say that "newbie is a state of being" or "state of mind" rather than a matter of someone being genuinely new to the game.

Most people seem to view it the same way I do, and that is why varient spellings like "noob" are used as opposed to just saying "newbie", as a way of differentiating when your talking about someone with a genuine excuse to be ignorant, and someone who doesn't have one.

Typically though "noob" is used as a jibe more than anything, rather than a serious insult. Though everyone pretty much acknowleges that those truely bad and unadaptable players ARE out there, as we all run into them from time to time. Oftentimes the guys who claim they don't desire elite gear, and then also complain about other people being able to get it from activities they can't do or "aren't interested in" are the noobs people are referring to.

A noob being differant from a casual player in the above respect, because the casual players being actually casual really don't care and keep their mouthes shut and sort of blend in. The noobs don't, they are out there waving around for all to see, and claiming that they should be able to bonk non-elite world mobs and walk away with the equivilent of 25 man raid gear, despite of course having no real NEED for such things because they aren't involved in any kind of progression and all it will do is overkill the non-elite world mobs they wind up fighting to an even greater degree than they are already doing.... assuming of course these guys can even manage to max a character to begin with.

Genuine noobs however are a tiny percentage of the population of any game. Players DO vary greatly in skill, but the noobs are about as rare as the actual "top of the game" players. It's just one of those vocal minorities people tend to get an under siege mentality about because they always like to sound off on zone chat channels.

For me, a noob is someone who is new to the said game and tends to do rather...unwell.
Once the person gets used to the game they cease being a "noob".

Well ninja'd on the Ctrl Alt Del comic. But yeah, there's two kinds. The newb is someone who's just new to the game and noobs are people who won't admit their newbitude.

A newbie is someone who is obviously new to the game and probably isn't very good. They can range from hostile to friendly.
A noob is someone who has played for long enough to be able to use cheap tactics, but not good enough to win without them. They can range from hostile to childish. Usually not very friendly, and often arrogant. Angers quickly to any challenge to their faux superiority.

Newb = new player, not a bad thing, just inexperienced but teachable
Noob = unwilling to learn or listen to advice, regardless of skill level

Yeah, noob or newb or nub, nubcakes, newbie, etc.

All mean 'new to' (insert task hear). Each with a varying degree of belittlement. for instance the OP is a newbie to the escapist.

I think we can agree newbie is the least insulting version.

Honestly I dont see a problem with the term, if your new to something dont be afraid to call yourself that. It changes the people your playing with expectations. Its only a problem when you play with newbs that dont admit it and do stupid things while saying they are pro.

In Magicka I play with newbies everyday and try to teach them spell combos and tactics, not only so they are more useful in our current game, but so they might in turn teach someone else in the future and keep the gaming going.

Explains it pretty well.

Newb is short for newbie, implies that you're just new to something, no reason not to get along well with these types as long as they don't slip into-

Noobism. Being a noob is when you act like a fool and bring shame upon everyone else, these are the fellows who give groups a bad name.

1. Term that is often used to define a new player, or someone who is unacquainted to the concept of gaming or a particular game, this generally being an online social interaction.

2. A term of derogatory that is used to insult or harass a player in an interactive social environment. It's use either comes from spite or the uneasy feeling of directed hatred.

2 kinds of noob,
The newbie: Innocently uninformed. Truly new to the game or genre. They want to learn to kick ass the way the other people do. Sadly, it won't happen as quickly as you want it to and may cost you a few wins. Don't rage at them. they are truly trying to compete with basically a lobby full of experienced people.

The n00b: Despicable gaming scum. Incorporates every cheap tactic to win and piss you off. It's almost as if 4chan itself infested your lobby for the sole purpose of sadistic trolling.
This is the best way I've seen it put.

Then there's also the Call of Duty version of "noob" which you are accused of being if you do pretty much anything online.

Me. I'm terrible at most videogames but I still play them because it's fun. I don't call other people n00bs because I have had bad experiences with the term (I was playing League of Legends and using a new champion for the first time in intermediate players-vs.-bots. I was dying a lot, so someone had the nerve to tell me to quit. If I could have switched sides momentarily, I would have just to kill him.)
