The Witcher 2 is an absolute king, it's gorgeous.
I was rather underwhelmed by it really. Amazing environments, yes, but they really failed in the character department. Those animations, especially the facial ones (pretty important in an RPG) really failed to deliver. Same counts for Metro 2033. It's one of the most atmospheric game I've
ever played, but it all falls apart the moment I meet a character.
To be fair, I have yet to see a game that beats HL2 in terms of infusing it's characters with humanity. It's not without reason that I can still clearly remember Alyx' warm smile when she saved Gordon's ass from those Combine in Red Letter Day.
Hence why I'm a big fan of BF3 when it comes to graphical advancement. They really payed a lot of attention to the animations. Not only from the characters, but from everything; how the trees sway when an RPG flies by or when a chopper hovers overhead, how the jeeps tumble about when they drive over a road that's shot to pieces. And don't forget the lighting and particle effects.
So yeah, hence why BF3 gets my vote, and not The Witcher 2 or Metro 2033.
In terms of art style I can't pick one though. I've played so many beautiful games in a humongous range of styles that it's just impossible to pick one that tops them all. And why would I want to anyway?

I would say Trine 2. Impossibly beautiful, even if you don't like the gameplay.

Sweet mother of mercy. Can I play that without having played the first game? Because that's one stellar looking game.

I always use Arcanum to test out my new systems, it looks great and if the system can't run it on full settings then I don't want it.
Wait, what? Not sure if talking about a different game than I'm thinking about, or just trolling. Because Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura succeeded in many things, but it's graphics isn't one of them.
