What does Escapist now about Yorkshire?

We have wonderful tea, Yorkshire puddings, flat caps, whippets, dominoes a good farming community, a long rivalry with Lancashire (in which I feel horribly compromised as my mother comes from Lancashire, whereas my father comes from Yorkshire), like our cricket, and lovely pubs. I come from Leeds, it is a pretty nice city, and there is a lot of countryside, especially if you go to Yeadon, Guisely and Otley. However, but I went to Nottingham University and I would much rather live in Nottingham than live in Leeds (which a lot of people find strange, but I had a really lovely time there).

The only part of Yorkshire I've actually stayed in is Hull. They have a fucking big bridge there. That's literally all I remember, apart from the usual stuff about puddings, cricket, whippets and daft accents.

I suppose being the son of a Mancunian, Yorkshire is never a subject of interest or discussion as far as my family are concerned. Dad usually characterizes Yorkshire men as being thick and tight-fisted, and harbours an intense dislike for John Prescott.

Oh and by the way, Yorkshire. Your tea is shite.

Is Leeds in Yorkshire? Leeds Festival is good fun, even if it is seen as the poor relation to Reading Festival. Seriously, Greenday couldn't be arsed to cross the North/South divide last year.

Well Yorkshire, lets see. There was the infamous Yorkshire civil wars in the 70s. Each riding went its own way under powerful warlords, the most most brutal being Thora Hird warlord of the north riding and Dikie Brid of the west riding. The horrible war started over the proper form of worship of St Geoffrey De Boycott and ended with a committee meeting of Yorkshire CCC and the exile of the arch heretic Ray of Illingworth to Nottingham. I believe Lord Brain of the close was nominated for a nobel peace prize for his part in the peace treaty. All is not well, rumor has it that the son of the arch heretic Richard of Illingworth has been sighted on the sacred turf of Headingley. Storm clouds gather and the west riding has a new warlord, the strangely named Sean of Bean.

LOL, post of the day. Though I don't think there are enough cricket fans to truly appreciate the full truth of it!

After I posted it, the thought did occur to me that making a joke about a spat between cricketers from 30 years ago probably confused most people, but I am glad that someone got the joke.

another Yorkshireman proudly throwing his flat cap into the ring. More specifically I'm from Pontefract (like the cakes the doctor mentioned in the yorkshire who episode, also yahtzee mentioned them once).

Fun fact: there's a Haribo sweet factory there, I have been told it's the only one outside of germany - seriously check the back packaging and you'll see dunhills pontefract. Currently on a work placement year in Malta, confirmed that to be the case here as well as in the netherlands.

Fun fact 2: before the parliamentarians knocked it down at the end of the civil war, pontefract castle was the most powerful castle in the country, and the last royalist held castle of the war. As well as the (supposed) site of Richard II's murder. The reason the castle was built? William the Conqueror took over and the area I live kicked up the biggest shitstorm about it. Twice. There's no other real strategic value to that castle except that it stopped rioting.

Fun Fact 3: there's a structure in the town centre called the Buttercross where people used to sell their wives if they didn't want them anymore.

I also live near Wakefield, smallest city in the country, it only qualifies as a city because it has a cathedral, otherwise its just a big kinda shitty town.

Well, very little considering I live there. My home is in Doncaster and I commute to Sheffield every day for uni, but I've still seen very little of the place. Literally the only location that springs to mind that would be well-known is Meadowhall, and that place is full of rude people. Seriously, I've never known people so reluctant to move out of your way, it's a chore just looking around.

Oh, and I own a Yorkshire Terrier, and I quite like Yorkshire puddings ^^.

Gods own Country (says the Barnsley man) been working in Nottingham for the last 12 months and from what I get from the outside opinion is that we are up there as some of the most friendliest people you'll ever meet and apparently our accent as a charm to it... I also know we had mines at one point, however Thatcher closed those and jobs are fairly scarce around her. Which is why I have to travel to Nottingham and dig for a living.
