If you have the meltdown perk, you can dispatch clustered groups of Deathclaws easily.
Or (as I found out the hard way), it can aggro a Deathclaw standing not quite close enough.

shotgun+bean bag rounds works well, those fuckers may have tough skin but they are exhausted just like the rest of us.

Going up the crane is a pretty decent idea. I used it and was able to snipe a couple of them, although I actually ran out of ammo so had to run away.
Thanks, I actually managed this (admittedly after a couple of tries) at a much lower level, I think around 20-25. You can funnel them up the crane towards you and just let rip with the highest-powered weapon you have. Good times!

Yea you need like about 9 training montages worth of game time playing about with the powder gangers and leigon recruits in the paddle pool before going toe to clawed whatever the hell with those guys, oh and pack bigger calibers.

Quarry Junction is a piece of cake compared to Deathclaw promontory. I breezed through Quarry Junction on Very Hard at level 25-ish with Brush Gun loaded with semiwadcutter hand loads but still got my ass handed to me in Deathclaw promontory and I had an Anti-materiel rifle with match rounds.
I found that Holo-rifle with max-charged MFs works very well against them, also Light Machine Gun with AP rounds and Automatic Rifle with AP or JSP rounds. If your character is sneaky, you can also use a silenced Sniper Rifle (AP or JSP rounds).

I don't know about New Vegas but in Fallout 3 my first encounter with a Deathclaw was pretty unimpressive. Level 14, took only about 4 or 5 shots from my alien disintegrator for it to go down.

Could use the Ranger Takedown like I did, but that is a tough fight.

AP bullets or scoped rifles work wonders.

In the end game, I spent all my time hunting death claws. Anti-materiel rifle is great, especially when you get headshots. Other than that, take a hunting shotgun in case they get close and lay mines around your encampment.

Hunting deathclaws is insanely fun and profitable.

Easiest way? Do a sneak-critical with a sniper (Any sniper/rifle with high damage works fine). All the time, on every Deathclaw.

It saves you a lot of trouble but I will still recommend you to level up a bit in advance.

uhh....noone actually told me not to go north...
Well, unless you shot everyone or completely ignored/skipped interaction with NPC's, following the main quest line or the quest line in Goodsprings at the least will lead to multiple NPC's telling you that mean nasty things are north and "shooting them only seems to make them angry"...

I went north on my first playthrough purely out of morbid curiosity... people in Sloan told me about the Deathclaws. I still went north, saw that they were actually deathclaws and not some weaker level capped equivalent (like stunted scamps and scamps in oblivion) and turned around. Having played all Fallout games, Deathclaws are famous for been deadly to low level players.

This isn't to say that you did something wrong, many people will go north upon hearing of some big nasties... but to not hear anyone say anything about them or not hear warnings of the northern path? You seem to be skipping content to your own detriment.

EDIT: I would also like to add, there is another route just behind Goodsprings, but it's got Cazadors... they are actually as bad as deathclaws for lower level players. Just a heads up.

Btw all these tactics are effective unless you are facing the legendary deathclaw. In which case you use the anti material rifle and lots of mines MINES EVERYWHERE. Or if your goal is just the enclave armor that he guards use a lot of stealth boys, and luck.

Determination and lots and lots of movement.

I cherry tap Deathclaws to death either by keeping my distance from them while shooting the fuck out of my assault rifles or by using Dogmeat to distract them. People complain about Dogmeat being weak but on Very Hard difficulty, Dogmeat was practically invincible, and rarely if ever died. Other companions often serve as good distractions, but in NV they died more easily, so the "keep your distance and fire" method applied much more.

Deathclaws can be beaten at any level if you try hard enough.

For Fallout 3: Dart gun saves frikkin' lives. As soon as you get the schematics make it. Nothing will ever kill ever again(cept maybe for Ghoul Reaver but eh...)

For Fallout NV: Sneak crits man, they make all the difference. Seriously though I'd go for All American or Anti-Material rifle.

EDIT: If you're an unarmed build you could go slayer + perk that knocks down = Almost infinitely downed Deathclaw.(Paralyzing palm works well too)

As soon as I got the Anti-Material Rifle at like level 15, I went to the mine and sat on a mountain and sniped them all. Oh yeah my guns skill was at 100 so you should do that too.

I had to clear them out with the Full suit of remnants armour and the unique gauss rifle and an Anti-Material rifle with Armour piercing rounds.
