What does your father do for fun?

My step-dad likes golfing, watching Hand-egg and, going to Nascar races. He seems to like grilling too though not quite to the level of Hank Hill. He used to really like playing the old Madden games though I don't think he's really into those anymore. Every so often we'd have a get-together with his friends and Mom's friends and he'd drink a bit and start dancing to Red Hot Chili Peppers like a dork.

My Dad is...hm...hopefully engaging in a fulfilling celestial activity? I don't know...his body was donated to the University of Maryland but by now is probably all used up. Assuming there are arcades in the afterlife I would guess he's playing things like Arctic Thunder, Hydro Thunder, the Crusin' series and various crane games. I'll probably figure it out when I die...if the afterlife has food I'll take pleasure in telling him, "I told you so!"

He works, comes home, drinks screwdrivers and contemplates life, then he eats, watches sitcoms and goes to bed (a watches sitcoms in the bedroom or falls asleep in the chair watching sitcoms in the living room). He'll usually talk to me about work or politics or some deeper topic every now and then.

On the weekends he does yard work and visits my grandma and occasionally he'll go out to eat with my mom.

He likes silly gimmicky toys (remote controlled cars, helicopters, robots, ext) but they lose their appeal quickly. He used to be big into James Bond movies, he likes Mel Brooks films, the occasional crime drama. He used to watch documentaries, not so much anymore.

The only time he's ever played video games was the old school arcade games when he was younger and when I was very small, he bought a console and I remember his excitement in showing it to me and I watched him play it, but for the love of me, I can't remember which console it was, all I remember really is a boxy looking thing and a game that was very clearly a point and click with a horror, adventure theme to it (in color). My mom said it was an Atari, but I don't think that's the right era, the graphics were more advanced, PC-like (though I know my dad was a fan of Atari).

My dad likes watching action movies and spaghetti westerns. He enjoys gardening, hunting, fishing... most things involving the outdoors.

He also enjoys playing billiards. Mostly eight-ball. He's insanely good at it, too. It's not uncommon for him to never give his opponent a turn. He can consistently run all of the balls off of the table and win on the break. It's really fun to watch. I'm pretty sure he could've been a pro.

When my Dad was healthy he designed, built and raced Pro stock cars, was in racing magazines and was famous locally ( as his primary hobby his actual job was an engineer). He actually went airborne in his car, flipped 3 times, exploded then flipped 2 more times and lived to tell about it. He ALSO was a pyrotechnician and liked to blow up lots of stuff. He used to have the local police department train on their land and he would stage explosions and smoke screens to help them better train for attacks. In addition, he built large hobby planes and would parachute our lunches to us while we were playing in the field, and built robots and other things like go carts, dune buggies, RC cars and boats around the house. He enjoyed many things, so I will list some of the others here as well:

1)Taking the race car down the street and scaring all the neighbors with the thunderous noise that rattled their homes then putting it in the neighbors barn and leaving so when the cops showed up they couldn't find anything..

2)Shooting flaming arrows..

3)Shooting guns.

4)4 wheeler paintball wars.

5)video games, he particularly liked racing and space games.

6)Collecting and watching Star Wars and Star Trek.

He plays casino games on facebook. That's really all he does now that he's retired and has a gambling addiction with no money. Of which, I feel no sorrow for, since when I was a kid, he wasted ten grand at the casino, thus making us move to way lower standards than we were at. Basically, from middle class to poor.

My father spends most of his time working these days but back when I was young he did all of the things I now love. So did my mom for that matter. Dad played football, chess, video games, read comics and fought a lot. Mom is an artist who LOVES RPGs (she hand-drew maps of every area in the first three dragon warrior games) and would kick my dad's (and everyone else's) butt in both tabletop and video game strategy games even going so far as to master one of the first RTSs (Herzog Zwei on the Genesis. Blast processing bro.)

I turned out to be an amalgamation of these things. I'm the only one I know who could seriously challenge my mother's l33t skillz. Seriously, she'd pwn you nubs hardcore and she's in her late 50s.

If he's not enjoying his retirement from the comfort of his recliner, he's building models and painting. My father's been crazy into model railroading since before I was born, so that's his pride and joy. He builds a lot of it from scratch, and the craftsmanship is superb. He paints all the pewter figures by hand, and used to do it professionally on the side before his friend's business went under.

My dad does a lot of things:
He watches sports (baseball and football, mostly).
He watches various TV shows that he likes.
He enters Texas Hold 'Em tournaments (with my mom).
When I'm around, we'll watch goofy horror movies together.

My dad is a true Canadian.

Every friday he goes to play hockey with a local "Garage league" and he's gotten a reputation for being a REALLY good goal scorer (They used to call him the "Midnight Train" because when he got on a breakaway, he'd score 80% of the time. Now, they call him the "Ghost" because he always find a way to stay open near the goal and put it in. Goalies keep asking him "Where did you come from?!" and he's there looking perplexed saying "I'm not a small player man. How the hell did you NOT see me hanging around the goal?" XD)

And the rest of his spare time is usually spent watching hockey related videos on TV or online.

And he also helps mom out around the house. She's permanently stuck in "Clean, tidy, renovate, repeat" mode, so he helps her out a lot with that. XD

My dad does works two jobs on a 10-14 hour shift and sleeps only, and he's almost 60.

We're hoping we can pick up a few contracts and hire some subordinates to work them so he can retire.

A number of different things, actually. I remember he used to be into softball and even knew how to ride a skateboard upside down for a few moments. Of course, constant issues with his knees and ankles over the years has made it hard for him to do any sports. Even so, he's currently a big fan of disc golf. Also, in the past he was also big on cooking and fishing.

Nah, he does that just by being himself. For fun I'm pretty sure he just goes to tacky festivals and 3rd rate cover band shows with my Step-mom. Maybe throw in some guitar playing with his band and that about sums it up.

My dad loves chasing trains. It was his hobby and he worked for the railways for 45 odd years before retiring.

As a dad myself, I love playing video games with my son, playing tennis with my daughters and writing. I don't get time for much else.

This is a really interesting thread! I've got 2 dads (who get along really well, incidentally)

Stepdad mainly walks the dog, watches the news and catches up with old friends and family. Spends a lot of time in the garden and cleaning the house as well. Dabbles a bit in audiophile-grade hifi equipment, and likes to keep up to date on worldwide economics (was a banker before retiring).

Dad likes to drive around and explore everywhere he can reach by road. Mountains, passes, towns, churches, just any point of interest, obscure or not. He also reads a lot of world news (quite the idealist), tech news, and sometimes goes around to people's houses and fixes their computers. And catches up with old friends too of course. Although he lives alone, he never has a shortage of people to talk to as he's incredibly social and will strike up a conversation with literally anyone, even despite the rare language barrier (he speaks about 5 or 6 at a conversational level).

What my dad does for fun is pretty simple:
-He listens to Audio books, mostly sci-fi, he's the one who introduced me to Honor Harrington.
-Plays a lot of Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares, Bejeweled, and sometimes FPS games. He's not as big a gamer as I am though.
-Listens to the Security NOW! podcast hosted by Steve Gibson(the one famous for computer and robotics stuff) and Leo Laporte, so he can terrify me with new security threats.
-Watches a lot of BBC shows on PBS and TCM, along with The Shanarra Chronicles, Castle, Bones, Blue Bloods, and Chuck Lorre sitcoms, and internet video shows like Ridiculousness and TruTV's Top Funniest.
-He's a big fan of lolcats, and cats in general... All hail the objectively best companion animal, smarter than a dog and doesn't crap on the carpet!
