What ever Happened to Cheat Codes?

I recently purchased and beat Just Cause 2, and certain something came to mind. That game would be absolutely perfect for cheat codes. Like invincibility, unlimited cash, ammo, etcetera. Then I wondered why most modern day games no longer have cheat codes. They used to add levity and re-playability, making another play-through just as entertaining as the first, if not better. The last game I remember having cheats (that I played) was Mercenaries 2, and I absolutely loved it. I know they can stop you from getting achievements but in most games with codes you can just turn them off. So tell me fellow readers and posters of The Escapist forums, where and why did the cheats go?

Lack of interest in them from the general public. Plus they were replaced by trophies and online. Before, cheats was where re-playability was at. Now it's team deathmatch and "Kill X amount of monsters"

God of War 3 had some pretty fucking awesome cheats that made the game really fun to re-play though, has have a couple of games.

Sadly, God of War 3 simply isn't like the first game...

I always wonder what happened to cheat codes too :c

Now we're in a DLC-age developers are too ready to pull cheap tricks like have us pay for things like level select or extra money. If not that then they'll just not have cheat codes at all.

Achievements and Online Multiplayer aren't a reason not to have them. It's really quite easy to disable these things.
