What ever happened to cheating?

Once upon a time, as a young Nod Commander I would Nuke the pixels out of one tiny insignificent soldier, thinking to myself "It's alright I'll just make another"

I have probably stolen 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 credits in my gaming career

I have unlocked all the possible weapons under the sun at level one, so to destroy everyone with my unfair advantage.

But alas no longer, where have all the cheats gone?

Now, I know there are many amongst you who will complain that cheating removes the challenge aspect to a game, however removing them removes that second time round reward! Remember Metal Gear solid? I completed the game twice to get all the cheats then spent about the same length of time running around killing minions in new and interesting ways.

Whats your thoughts?

If you completed the game twice to unlock everything and then still enjoyed playing afterward, why do you need to cheat? Just unlock everything yourself.

I'm ok with UNLOCKED cheats. Cheats you can enter whenever are boring.

I kinda just gradually stopped using cheats over time. I don't remember why.
Boy do I remember how much fun GTA: Vice City was with cheats. I guess I just started having more fun completing the game on my own.

I think developers stopped doing cheats because it will really show how short their games are.

I think most people use cheats only to increase the replay value of a game. It's certainly fun to go back through a game pwning every enemy who gave you trouble the first time around because you've got the ultimate weapon now.

The idea that I should have to "earn" a cheat is dumb. First, it's a cheat; if it's earned it's a *reward*, and second who made the developer the moral police? Who cares if I get a weapon I didn't "earn" by going through the game umpteen times and doing tasks that are no fun for me? It's a game for entertainment. Why should it be "work?"

Cheats are fine except while playing other humans online.

Otherwise, how you personally enjoy your video games is your business.

I feel the same way about gays.

There's actually a logistic reason as well;

Cheats are made to make development/alpha testing easier, because a developer doesn't want to spend an hour leveling up or collecting resources just to test if one thing works.

Cheats allow the programmer to reach a point where the engine may potentially fail without a lot of work.

In older games they were simply left in for players.

Now, with so many dynamic, rich SDKs available for every imaginable task, testing early on becomes less of a necessity, while beta testing becomes the more in-depth and necessary test period.

Sooo...if someone's gay with other people that's bad and if their gay alone that's ok? ;p

Cheating? Hmm...depends. Online, in multiplayer - of course not!
Singleplayer? Why not? I mean cheats make the game attractive when you're fed up with the standard gameplay.
For example, most action games are like an action movie, keep you on the edge of your seat when your health is low or a lot of enemies. And that's OK if you want such an experience out of the game. If you just want an action slaughter to relax, you cheat or play Serious Sam. ;)

Some cheats we great. Anyone who says the completed Turok without ever entering the Big Cheat and putting disco mode on is a liar. A liar, I say!

some games are kind of broken and cheats render them pixellated perfection.

Case in point: Evil Genius.

The "game" isn't that great. The evil lair simulation is. Rack up a whole bunch of money by typing "cash" in or whatever... then get to dominating the world!

I personally think that it ruins the game. Once you beat the game with cheats, there's nothing to be proud of. I think it's a lot more fun to have a challenge. Online cheaters are awful though.

Unlock is fun, gives it replay value

and i think removing cheats makes it easier for them to make the multiplayer competitive?

I personally think cheats can be incredibly fun. But I think they work better for some games than others. I mean can you honestly say you didn't play Serious Sam without turning on Hippy mode? Watching monsters explode into flowers is awesome!

More on the topic, I think that cheats should be allowed only after you complete the game. You win and you get a big ol' "Congratulations! You can now play with cheats! Go to the cheats mode on the main menu to activate the cheats you want!"

After you've completed the game the way the devs meant it to be played...cheat away.

I always play through without cheats first, then I go back and explore with god mode and crazy guns.

On the unlocking issue:
Unlocking new superpowered guns and moves is legit. I love getting them and playing though the game again. However, unlockable cheats are pointless and stupid, and go against everything a cheat is. It is an easy way out, not something you have to earn.

Where have the cheats gone? third party.

It's called a "Hex editor".
I personally like cheats being available,i don't think it's worth taking it out if they already made it for testing.

And if you don't want to use them, then don't.
Simple as that.

GTA has alright cheats for a laugh. Ammo, ammo, ammo, ammo, ammo, take out flamethrower, and find a police station. Aah... good times.
As for where they've gone, they have more than likely been removed because of the rise of online multiplayer.
