OT: Speaking as a former Goth, some of us just grew up and moved on. Yeah, there are still some of them roaming around and carrying the old flag, but it's just a sub-culture that just kind of died by the time the early 2000s rolled around.

Oh, we're still around. We just wear normal people skins and normal people clothes now - most of the time.

As for the awesome underground scene - around here, it got torn to shreds by the influx of bad music, the emo trend, insatiable sexual hunger that would end in getting a bouquet of STDs, including HIV, vegans and vegetarians objecting to perfectly fine satinist blood n guts chic and impaled goats heads, political folks making everything political and projecting political statements into everything, oh, and the same political folks hiring skinhead security musclemen to keep non-Marx-worshipping folks out of events that turned stale, boring and no fun in no time. We're just not entertained by Titty von Teese or Dr. Fisto fisting fistees on stage for the lulz.

It died in my area and was replaced by the emo kids that thought they were goth and ruined it for the rest of us. The scene got really bad here, and so I just stopped being around them since I wanted nothing to do with them anymore. It more about sex here than anything else. Ask them about theatre and whatever and they give you a blank stare, and they just go back to being...whatever they were doing.

Such is life I suppose. :/

Well first of all, I don't think you can call it a fad. It's being around for over three decades now. I think it's more a scene of style, or maybe a sub-culture. And like all subcultures, they change and evolve, but never truly die. Also, not everybody openly identifies as goth or emo or...whatever. So I think it's unfair to say it's dying, or that it was just a fad, or God forbid, "something to grow out of". As my friend, the 48 year old goth woman who owns her own business says: 'goth is something most people grow into.'

1) Noone gets dressed up to hang around on the street past the age of 18. The only reason to do that is because you're not old enough to get into clubs, and all the goths are. Go to a goth club, you will see goths.

This. Other points are good, but mainly this.

If there's a good goth/industrial/metal club in your area, there will be a healthy, if not thriving, goth scene that simply isn't seen much in the light of day (that's kinda half the point). If there isn't any place for them to go, however, it will likely dwindle.

For me, it all started out by dressing up majestically, and we would still spontaneously congregate to, say, bring a lost, drunk soul home and turn his humble abode into a black hippie love zone. We'd bite off moles and stitch up holes. We'd get drunk on red wine, met and absinthe while discussing Camille de Saint-Saens or de Sade or agreeing on Marilyn Manson being an exploitative hack (Still like Antichrist Superstar and most everything prior to that).

The scene was decidedly monochrome in appearance, but it was home and family to the most diversified individuals around. It was the most forgiving and all-inclusive scene I've ever seen. Gay? Transsexual? Bus driver? Pervert? Come all, we love you as long as you don't bore the nipples off our tits. You'd stand at the bar discussing Tetsuo Iron Man or Big Lebowski while sipping White Russians, getting complimented for your vintage corsage before going walkies with the gimp-on-a-leash that chose you as his mistress for the night. You'd let him lick your boots and whip him a bit before allowing him to stand and wank in the corner in all his seven foot muscleman glory while you were trying to get impregnated in the communal love zone by your loved one. It was a good time, and we traumatized many a technicolor homeboy in baggy pants and saggy face that would never understand why he wasn't let in or what we were really up to.

Don't diss the sex. It was splendid fun and good. There were plenty of asexuals, antisexuals and indecisive folks happy to just go peeping tom in their corners, even if that corner was right in the middle of the action.

Most other parties and festive events I've since been to don't really deserve to be called such.

I don't know where you live, but it was way different here. There wasn't that very many of us to begin with since it's so damn hot here that wearing black or heavy cloths late in the day was just not fun. I should say there were a few of us of the group that didn't act like a bunch of idiots and we didn't get into the scene just for sex, and the whole sex part didn't appeal to me to begin with. We mainly talked about books and theatre all the while playing chess, and some Magic The Gathering, but that was my influence since I just wanted to play with other people. So there's that.

I knew there were a few goth places to hang, but those were in the sketchy part of the town and they were known for drugs more than anything else. I enjoyed the scene, but it was just too bad that it was ran into the ground super early here. I blame the heat since it's been known to make people act stupid.

They grew up/got older.

That's not a put down, it's just the truth. Most of the people I know who used to be goths will still dress up for parties and what not, but during the week they now have jobs. So they tone down the make up and though they'll probably still mostly wear blak/dark colours, the corsets and skirts stay in the closet.

Yeah, pretty much this. They got jobs that require them to look like average Joes. Some just simply grew out of it.

I know far more people who are formerly goths than I do actual goths.

I attend a gothic/industrial themed night with friends every few weekends. Quite a few people there. They're around, maybe just not fully decked out day-to-day.
