What exactly is a "dudebro" game?

A subculture of mostly lowbrow adolescent and adult XBOX gen gamers who let trends of the shooty / sporty type dictate their likes and dislikes.

Many are competitive hardcore gamers or wannabe hardcore but in the most stupidest elitist & dickheaded way.

They also pinched and bastardised all the terms from oldschool shmups and the arcade subculture, that includes shooters so now we have to say shmups so Space Invaders doesn't get confused with CoD

If someone loves CoD just for it's own merits and not their peers, they arn't Dudebros in my book

Basically, if a game that a hipster gamer doesn't like becomes popular, they'll say it's just for douchebags so that they can continue feeling superior.

Really, it's just a meaningless piece of nonsense so that some gamers can feel good about themselves against all logic, just like "hardcore gaming"

Never heard of this term before, but I'll tell you that the Halo crowd is very different from the Call of Duty crowd, mostly in that the CoD crowd has more fist-pumping, gel-haired frat boys than any other FPS out there.

A "dudebro" game is a game played with buddies while high-fiving eachother and laughing their asses off when they die.

You ever know how the people who love dudebro games do nothing but have a blast playing video games? No whining, no depression about the state of the industry, and no baying at the moon over nothing. And no sob stories about fucking up their credit card information on Steam/Origin.

Those guys really know how to be gamers.

I would personally say some of the redarded crap we see on You Tube (comments) comes from "DudeBros"

But then again we don't seem to define Dudebros in the same way

I see it as a game that you can pick up and get right into without needing to know the story or anything like that.

As opposed to Skyrim where anyone watching you play it will see the game as extremely dull.

To be fair, the people normally associated with the Dudebro gamer crowd usually aren't all that tolerant either. I've been called a fag/dork for playing Skyrim (don't really like it, but I'm not ashamed to have played it), D&D, Journey and Dragon Age: Origins as well as many other games. Not by merit of the quality of the game, none of the people had any idea what the games were about, but because they didn't look manly enough (legitimate reasons I have got).

People who play CoD? I wouldn't throw into that category, people who happen to play CoD and won't look at any other game because they don't fit into what a man should like (ie: Explosions, guns and toughness) do

A common insult thrown at certain games is that they were targeting the "frat boy" crowd but what exactly are those elements. While titles like Madden and Call of Duty you can kinda see the underlying elements, you also see games earning this title such as Halo and Gears of War are knee deep in heavy science fiction elements which are more "nerdy" elements akin to stuff like Aliens and Star Wars.

Anybody care to try to define the term?

The "fratboy" is a streotype, much like the "nerd". Think every football playing antagonist in a high school comedy.
The games (and not just games) a "fratboy" should like, involve rugged macho brooding protagonists, lots of violence and gore, fast pace, elaborate set pieces, good visuals etc.
Basically all "manly" things.

Cod, Gears and Halo would be the original trinity of this. Now there is quite a bit more but they are just all trying to cash in on the fratboy audience brought in by the aforementioned games.

Not really. Ok Halo does, but the multilayer portion certainly doesn't, and that's the part that gets the most attention. All of Gears can just be described as 'A bunch of random stuff happens, you move to point A, a bunch of random stuff happens, you move to point B.'. Any sci-fi connections Gears has are as soft core as you can get; it's essentially just another war game where you play as football stars; the pinnacle of duedbro shlock.
