I was hanging out with some friends the other night when I realized that we really need a good fighting game. I'm talking about a good 2D (you know what I mean), game stick, combos, corner trap fighting game. What game should we get (on the 360)?
I'd prefer a retail game, not XBLA if possible.

I'll say BlazBlue because people here seems to like it. Personnally, i've never tried it but i've seen some gameplay vids of it and it seems pretty fun but whatever you do, don't pick Street Fighter 4 or Marvel vs Capcom 2. Yes, MVC2 is fun but the minute you go online, you'll wanty to rip every single button off that controller. The game is as cheap and unbalanced as it gets.

I will also say BlazBlue, though you may want to wait for Chrono Phantasm to come out this Winter.

I've actually been really curious about this because I really want to play a Persona game, but I don't really want to buy any Sony consoles.

Those were two of the three (the other being Mortal Kombat) that I was looking into. I'm not too concerned about online multiplayer. Most of the time I'll either be playing against a computer or with friends locally.

As for Blazblue. I've looked at it, it looks pretty good, but I'm not sure I can easily sell the anime art style and the unfamiliar characters with my friends. If it's worth I can no problem though.

Well it is for 360 so....get it. As for Blazblue, I've been beaten senseless by an army of Tagers in Blazblue. There are so many of them, and THEY ALL WRECK MY SHIT.

Persona 4 Arena would be an extremely easy recommendation if you were familiar with Persona 3 and 4. I still recommend it if you simply enjoy fighting games, but it's a little pricey. It's a well designed game, and it is without a doubt my favourite fighter this generation, but pretty much every other fighting game out there is at a discounted price.

The BlazBlue games are pretty good, but you may want to hold off for the upcoming BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma.

Mortal Kombat sounds like a good fit for your situation. The game has plenty of offline content, and everyone loves fooling around with fatalities. It's a game that does pretty well at gatherings.

Well, yeah I know Arena is, but from what I've seen that's the only Persona 4 port and I'm not sure if it involves the same Persona 4 stuff that the game is known for.

Persona 4 Arena - havent played yet as isnt out here but have heard good things and I will be getting.

Blazblue CSEX - good 2d anime type fighter lots of content and solid netcode can take some getting used to though but practice will pay off.

King of Fighters XIII - my personal favourite atm (may change with persona 4 arena) its fast fluid and beautiful trouble is its pretty tricky as well and it does a crap job of explaining anything still fun for knockabout sessions but it will take some serious effort to get good more than I have time to give unfortunately.

SF4 AE - good fun but bugger all single player stuff good fighting system though even if trying to hit all the links is bloody annoying.

UMVC3 - good fun with friends but lack of content again that said the combats great fun and combos are a lot easier than in most of these other games which is good as its a really combo heavy game.

Mortal Kombat Komplete - excellent single player offering and is good fun in vs mode as well but the actual fighting mechanics are lacking when compared to any of the others, still the best mortal kombat ever though.

From your description I would go with Blazblue or UMVC3 both are heavy on the combos or Persona 4 as its made by the same guys as Blazblue so its probably similar or at least looks similar from what I have seen well actually it looks more appealing to me but then I do like Persona 3 and 4.

This one isnt a port it was made released for 360 and PS3 at the same time it takes place 2 months after persona 4 ends and continues its themes. They do explain stuff I believe so you can enjoy the story on its own but I daresay you will miss out on things if you havent played the original games.

You can just totally skip the story though and if it dosent interest you that would be the best bet as the story is apparently very long with little fighting just choose arcade mode or VS/Online instead and play that or any other mode except story.

I think there are issues with latency on the 360 online atm but they are being worked on so hopefully that will be fixed soon if not already.

Gameplay wise its totally different from what Persona is known for as obv its a fighter not an RPG it just Persona as a fighter i.e same characters and themes etc similar story vein just different gameplay.

I've been having a lot of fun with Mortal Kombat, the latest one.

Supports up to four players, tonnes of extras etc, there's my two cents :)

what ever happened to virta fighter series? loved that game deep mechanics tons of stuff to unlock if you were obsessive about it, tons of different styles and characters that each felt unique and had a ton of moves that could be used to battle a variety of opponents effectively.

loved the shao lin fighting style in that game, and drunken masters were fun.

I'd say BlazBlue, as others already have.

I've only played Calamity Trigger, but I kind of love it. The only major deterrents for me are the high learning curve (I still don't know how to do all those special moves, and I got the game when that super-limited first run was in stores) and the ridiculous story mode, which branches all over and includes too much text for a fighter.

This is the kind of problem that's made me not want to get into X-Box, apart from monetary concerns besides. There's probably only a few games I want to get into out of a whole slew of X-Box games, so it's not worth the system.

Anyway, I have to agree on the Blazblue concensus.

UMVC3 is pretty good. Though most people's opinion of the game comes down to whether or not they like the X-Factor mechanic. It makes the game more fun, unfun, fair, unfair, broken, hilarious, rageworthy and a slew of other adjectives.

Just remember that if you use Wesker you are dead to me. Broken piece of shit...

I'm gonna say Persona 4 Arena as well because from what i've seen it's pretty dang good. EU release dates. Why do you have to be so cruel?

I can tell i'm going to have to play Naoto to death. Wonder how her probably keepaway orientated kit works with the anti-keepaway (maybe more anti-runaway?) mechanic the game has.
