What game did you first hear the F-bomb in?

I've never heard a game say 'F-Bomb' before, but I've heard them shout 'FUUUUCK' a lot.

Why do you guys censor the word 'fuck'? Afraid your mothers will see? We are allowed to cuss, you know.

Because the older you get, the more swearing loses it's novelty, and the more likely you are to self censor unless you actually mean it.

Then why do so many adults still swear? Surely it must be something more that just "what the cool kids are doing."

I swear because I realize that they're just words.

From around the age of 12 to the age of 16, I remember almost everyone my age being in serious need of a mouthwashing, but it kind of trailed off after that. As for adults who swear like sailors, some just never grew out of that phase, others have bad tempers, and others do it for whatever reason. I don't like to swear at random because, if you use it sparingly, profanity can be more than "just words"; when I start swearing, people listen, because they know I'm serious.

As for another explanation of why it's not used in forum posts as much, losing one's temper is kind of an instant loss in most forms of debate. Swearing in a forum post is often a clear sign that the temper has been lost, and it can discredit an otherwise valid post. Even in the case of a thread like this, where the entire subject is profanity, it just comes across as more mature not to go right out and say it; it's kind of like discussing the morality of flipping someone the bird, and actually doing it in the process. Unless the action itself is integral to the point you're making, it's just needlessly inflammatory.

Trust me. Even if I am just 15 years of age, I've never given a (playing by your rules) shit about what the "cool kids" do. Sure, I do frequently succumb to the flaws of the adolescent mind, but I will be one of the last people to roll with the popular crowd.

Oh, don't worry about it; I could tell you weren't angry with me. I guess the "cool kids" thing may be a little off base; in my experience, it was less the cool kids specifically, and more peer pressure from all around. A lot of the time you don't even notice it, which may be why it's so entrenched. As another example of what I'm talking about, think of all the complaints you see on this forum about 12 year old kids shrieking and swearing in online shooters. Most of the people on this site hate it, because they see it as immature and annoying. Personally, I don't care if a 12 year old has a mic, as long as they stay polite -- but that's getting slightly off topic.

Swearing is considered mature content, but it's not the act of swearing that makes it mature; quite the opposite in fact. The actual sign of maturity is knowing when it's okay to swear and when not to, but it takes a while for most people to learn that, hence the swearing kids on Xbox live. It's pretty much the same thing with why so many kids get a little obsessed with violent games when they are finally allowed to play them -- the idea that this content is only for adults, therefore it makes you more like an adult to partake in it.

I hope you don't actually get mad over this; I'm speaking from personal experience and giving my honest advice on this, not trying to keep someone I see as a kid from cussing up a storm

The first game I can remember hearing the word "fuck" in was probably Kingpin: Life of Crime, which isn't surprising as that was heavily publicised for it's use of profanity as a means of conversation which ended up making these hardcore criminals sound like kids in a playground. I remember modding my game and replacing all the profanity .wav files with Mr. T samples, not for prudish reasons, but because Mr. T makes everything seem better.

If you include modded games, then the first game was probably Worms, for which I'd downloaded many, many sound packs and the ones based on films had quite a few profanities... the Die Hard 3 sound pack springs to mind with it's many Samuel L Jackson swears.

The first game I can remember that featured profanity was probably either How To Be A Complete Bastard, Rock Star Ate My Hamster, Viz: The Computer Game or a similar adult themed game on my Spectrum, which existed during a time when computer games were seen as the domain of the adult nerd rather than toys for children, so there were quite a few mature games (and programs) which would feature profanity and even sex, however the technological limitations meant you had to read the words rather than hear them.

I think even the old The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings: Game One text based adventured games actually recognised profanity and would admonish you or give amusing reactions if you typed in swear words.

I had one text based adventure game that if you typed in "shit" or "piss" would make your character defecate, which then added shit and a puddle of piss to the scene... which turned out to be quite useful because, like an animal, I used this "ability" to mark may way around the world and not get lost, e.g. in a maze I took a dump at the beginning of every dead end path I'd already explored.

However, if you typed in "fuck" or "****" it would reply "That's not very nice", then if you repeated those words it said "I said that's not very nice, if you say that again I'll turn off the game" and sure enough, if you excessively repeated "fuck" or "****" it performed a soft reset of your computer, although you can't say you weren't warned.

Though, the more memorable time was Mass Effect 2. After the original avoided swearing at all, hearing Aria drop one near the very start stuck with me.

I want to say the first game that I owned that used the word was Modern Warfare 2. It kinda caught me off guard, since the back of the box doesn't say "Strong Language" like you'd expect if it contains that word. At least I wasn't playing that part when my parents were in the room.

As for the rest of your post, I wouldn't beat myself up too much about taking an argument to it's conclusion if I were you; as long as you're willing to admit you're wrong if it truly becomes clear that you are, sticking to a position can really help you work on your debate skills -- especially in cases where there isn't really a right or wrong answer.

Again, this was an interesting discussion, and I'm glad we were able to talk it out. That's why I love this forum -- you never know what you're going to talk about, or with whom, but it's pretty much guaranteed that it will be both entertaining and civilized.

Probably Grand Theft Auto 3, but the word fuck being used isn't so memorable that I would remember "HOLY CRAP THAT GAME SAID FUCK IN IT!" I mean, come on, it's just a word, even if there is some random moral authority out there telling me I shouldn't say fuck because it's a "bad" word.

Rather than rant, I'll just make it short and sweet: Fuck the thought police, I'll use whatever words I want regardless of if you want me to think they are naughty. Who are they to make that choice? In fact, who are "they" at all, anyway? We're just supposed to think fuck is a bad word because so many people say so, nobody ever actually explains why in a logical manner. It's just the norm we're supposed to go along with for some silly reason. And I'm starting to rant anyway so I'm going to shut up now.
