My personal favorites are the mass effect trilogy. I also enjoy the arkham games, Assasin's creed and used to be an avid Guild Wars player.

Heya. Man in his 20s here, I'll answer for myself but can also attest to what 2 female friends of mine play, since we play together a lot.

Right now, I'm enjoying The Old Republic a great deal (gave a wide-berth to everything BioWare related after Mass Effect 3 but then Citadel came out, took it as my endgame and decided to give SW:TOR a try since it was free). Also, predictably Mass Effect 3, and I picked up Final Fantasy IX again lately. ^^

My friends usually play Skyrim. I played too for a while, but now we're all just waiting for The Elder Scrolls Online. They also played SW:TOR but got tired of it after the latest weekend marathons (double the experience was nice, played more, end result was they burned out on it =P). One also picks up a Final Fantasy game every now and again, like many she raved with the first she played, in her case, VII.

What hooks us is the story. Gameplay is nice but it doesn't win us many favors. On my end, If there's no story involved, I don't hold on to any multiplayer game or mode very long (MMORPGs being the exception, since the objective is both multiplayer and story.)

There's lots of overlap in my experience. Other groups of friends I have, from both genders, usually get together over a game of Sims and the like for instance and I can't stand those games. From what I see, it depends more on the person than the gender.

Anyhoo, just my (rather large ^^; ) 2 cents. Enjoy your playing and good luck on your assignment. =)

I know Point-And-Click Adventure, JRPGs, MMOs and Survival Horror have women as a big percentage of total players.

PC FPSes with some community also has many women (Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike, CoD4, Team Fortress), but not as big of a percentage as the above mentioned genres.

The ones that interest them I'd assume. Just as guys have their individual preferences for games so do girls; you can't generalize their preferences based on gender.

Not sure why, but the question posed here bugs me a bit. I know a ton of other girls super into the exact same games men are...I think we are just more used to flying under the radar to avoid being objectified (At least in MMOs, in my experience). Women who play "Cutesy" games always are more vocal, you know, because they don't have to deal with Multiplayer sexism-So they haven't learned to "HIDE YO GENDER, HIDE YO NICE" Plus we are probably outnumbered still. Err.. What am I playing now? Sorry, I don't have just three and the list is not in order of import.

Mass Effect 3(For the tenth time)
Bioshock (Just the first one, I was through Infinite rather quickly and don't have the care to play it again)
System Shock
Minecraft
LoL
Starcraft II: ROTS
World of Warcraft (When I can be arsed)
Guild Wars II
SWTOR
Allods Online (This consumes most of my time-AIRSHIP BATTLES AHOY)
Fire Emblem
Ni No Kuni: WotWW
Injustice (Killing super amounts of time on it)
LOTRO (So I Roleplay Sometimes, sue me)
& LOTS OF BETAS

So yeah. Also I would love to point out an excellent statement;
There'd be more girl gamers if girls weren't:
a) treated as plot continuations (love interests)
b) thrown in to spice it up (cough, asscreed2, cough)
c) excluded from box art (Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite - and the girl from the Last Of Us - the developers had to fight tooth and nail to get her on the box art)
d)objectified as much (refer to previous stereotypical girl in a game)
This in a bloody nutshell. Except for me it swings both ways. If the game treats main male OR female characters like mere plot devices and gives them no depth I'm out.

We lady gamers tend to play the same games as the men.

I'm 23 (female), been playing games for years. My latest top 3 games have been

-Tomb Raider (the new one, though i do love the others too)
-Mass Effect (doesn't matter which game i like them all)
-Batman: Arkham City (I felt like playing it again)

Notable mentions for recent games played include; Darksiders, Minecraft, FTL, InFAMOUS, Dune 2000 and the Assassin's Creed games.

You guys would probably get quite a shock if you saw my entire collection. I have a bootload of games, but these are ones i've played in the last 7 days, and this isn't counting things like my mega drive, master system and game gear games

Primary game platforms are my PS3 and PC

I hope you make sure the sample is diverse enough, if you just do it on gaming sites it might produce a skewed result.
Even just doing it on online forums might.

Well got myself a functional comptuer again, on the other hand the PS3 seems to have broken down. Thus altering my options severly. Mostly Rome Total War and Medieval 2 recently. The former is horribly unbalanced for the campaign, the second is annoyingly difficult as the east romans due to mongols.. Browsed through my RPGs. Got a bit bored when replaying Mass Effect, a pity as I really liked the original. Got stuck in KOTOR in a random battle vs three siths, party wipe within 10 seconds, damn that game is broken when it comes to balance. Tried to play through Neverwinter Nights again, boy is 3.o a horrible system (not to mention the lack of Eldritch Knight). Crysis at max graphics and difficulty, not daring to do the encounter vs 4 nanosuits (pretty scary o_O).

TL DR:
Rome: Total War
Medieval 2: Total War
Mass Effect
KOTOR
Crysis

Bonus stuff:
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Civilization 5
Age of Empires 2

I hope you didn't mean "new games", because I prefer quality over youth. :p

I think gender tends to be less of a divide with what games everyone plays in comparison to personal preference. Actually, I think men are kind of culturally shoehorned these past few years into the whole Shooter and action adventure machismo. If it doesn't include killing something every second or two in some semi-realistic fashion, it isn't manly enough.

I mean I only got my own games library to go on, but looking back over my last two generations of games, the titles I played back in the PS2 era included various JRPGs, 2d platformers, and the odd ended Action Adventure game like Dark Cloud 2. My Xbox 360 game list on the other hand is... Dynasty Warriors 5 empires, Dead or Alive 4, Soul Calibur IV, Oblivion, Mass Effect 2, Gears of War 2, and more Call of Duty and Halo titles then I feel comfortable listing. It's like there was a transition period back at the start of the 360 that sort of slowly gave way to the whole shooter craze. Thankfully I had my DS back then to cover the RPG needs.

My gf likes games that require her to think in some way and feature well-written and memorable characters and storyline. Puzzle games, RPGs and totally unique or quirky games like Heavy Rain, Loco Roco or Da blob are amongst her favorites.

Lately I've played a lot of games as I've been on holiday and before that there was a long drought whilst doing lots of work. Specifically I played and enjoyed Bioshock Infinite, Tropico 3, Trials Evolution and Spec Ops: The Line in the past month and a half.

I don't look for anything specific. I loved the story and world in Bioshock Infinite and the story in Spec Ops was compelling but neither of those things are in the other games.

My favourite games are all fairly expansive RPGs with lovely quirky bits worked in, like New Vegas and the better parts of Oblivion (i.e. not the main quest).

I also like TF2 and Payday and other games I can play slightly like I'm on a LAN with my mates.

My girlfriend has played a bit of TF2 with me and really likes classic strategy like Age of Empires and Rome Total War. Also she likes the current Lego games, which I absolutely detest.

My little sister plays TF2 now too and she's getting quite into it. But she sucks and only plays offline against bots. She plays free games almost exclusively because she's a total cheapskate.

Women play the same games as everyone else. Their tastes vary depending on their interests.

RPGs are my all-time favourite genre of game, so I play a lot of those.

Visual novels come in at a close second, but they aren't overly popular outside of Japan, so I don't get to play many in English.
[small][sub]And learning Japanese is far too much effort.[/sub][/small]

I also dabble in FPS, strategy games, rhythm-based games and casual/puzzle games.
[small]I've also been known to play platformers from time to time, but I generally dislike linear games.[/small]

I'll give you a 1, 2, 3 from my girlfriend.

(1) Zendoku
(2) Pikmin
(3) Elebits

Most important - Artistic style and charm. For example other games she's enjoyed - Yoshi's Island, Paper Mario, Zelda: Wind Waker, Pic Pic, Candy Crush Saga, Katamari Damacy, Mario Kart.

The game has to have charm. Not necessarily 'cute', she hates plenty of games that try to be cute. But they must have charm.

People are people no matter where you go. Bundling "women" into one category is unfair. My wife plays EVERYTHING (except Call of Duty because Call of Duty is the worst franchise known to mankind and does serious harm to gaming as a society and the people who only play Call of Duty are the worst dredges of humanity). And she makes sure to platinum (100% to you 360 folk out there) all of her games.

Female and 26 :)

Tomb Raider, really really enjoying it
Skyrim just got over 200 hours doing dragonborn
Bioshock Infinite

For me to enjoy a game it can be anything from good gameplay and interesting mechanics, compelling storyline and characters or it's just plain fun to play. Mainly though I like RPGs action/adventure type games and anything with a really good story.

I'd say it's mostly exactly the same games.

Both because whilst there certainly are some differences between the genders they're not nearly big enough to make gender the deciding factor as to what games someone plays and also because gaming as a whole isn't extremely varied when compared to other older media that have decades if not centuries behind them.

Both men and women that don't like what most games offer, which generally boils down to either action or strategy (not the genres, rather the experience. Shooters are high on action and RPGs can offer extremely strategical play). If someone doesn't like those things they'll generally have a different hobby they prefer, they won't play games.
