LA Noire sucked me in enough to qualify it as time travel; my immersion was so deep the sun rising didn't so much snap me out of my gaming sesh as prompt me to investigate the curious light with the sound of piano tinkles.

For pure fun, I can't go past Horde mode on Gears of War 3 or an against the odds battle on Smash Bros. Brawl.

Bizarrely, one of my favourite games I never seem to tire of is Custom Robo Arena on the Nintendo DS. It's repetitive and the battles will always boil down to button mashing to spam attacks, no matter how carefully you planned your customisation, but I can't get enough. Wiping the grins off those smug future-dwelling twats in a hail of fluoro polygons never gets old.

Platformers, shooters, action RPGs, and bullet hell shooters.

Currently playing Mass Effect 3...and not bitching about it.

So...you'd recommend it?
I want to recommend it.

But, have you ever played (experienced, read...whatever) a visual novel before?

Also, I would like to point out that Alternative is a sequel to a VN called Muv-Luv (don't ask). While Alternative is a sci-fi epic about humanity's last stand against a powerful alien threat, that isn't exactly how the story starts out in Muv-Luv.

It'll take a while to explain so I'll just point you towards this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.288229-Deskimus-Prime-Presents-Awesome-Games-with-Stupid-Names-Part-1-Muv-Luv] and this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.290270-Deskimus-P-Presents-Awesome-Games-With-Stupid-Names-Part-2-Muv-Luv-Alternative] (read them in that order).

Feel free to ask me anything after reading those.
