hmm, the definition of "cult classic" doesn't just mean "good but under-appreciated" but rather "unsuccessful but has a small and VERY DEVOTED following".

So the biggest candidate for that would be obscure games that didn't sell huge amounts yet have a lot of mods/ports/fan-subs or some other leagacy support such as server hosting long after the publishers have moved on. Tribes is a good example of that, still has fan support.

Half Life 1 and 2 have loads of mods but it did really well so it's like calling Star Wars a Cult Classic.

I'd like to nominate games of the Tomb Raider series, it isn't the huge success it was in the past but still has a solid and dedicated fanbase with loads of mod and skins support on PC from the very beginning.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Z
Total Annihilation
Dark Reign: The Future of War
Hitman: Codename 47
System Shock 2

I'd also say Duke Nukem 3D but I don't know if it had mainstream success or not. Either way, it's incredibly awesome.

Also I still have EVERY game I mentioned above, except for System Shock 2. I've never had that one. The ones I have are all in good condition, still. :D
I love your taste, sir.

Though I reckon you can add The 7th Guest to that list too. (Just not it's awful sequel.)

I'd go with Silent Hill 2 all the way. It's even got people who analyse the game for it's symbolism.

Looks like some people don't understand the term "cult classic".

I'd say Psychonauts, Arma II, Killer7, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, maybe Max Payne, Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines, Penumbra series, Gun, Kingpin, Mark Ecko's Getting Up.

Uru. Few played, fewer liked.

I LIKED.
Thanks for that, it's always nice to see someone remembers it existed. No one really talks about Myst these days, much less Uru, but it was always my favorite. Closely followed by Riven.

On topic besides above, probably Indigo Prophecy. Yeah it screwed a lot of things up and the story got a little weird near the end, but it was totally unlike anything that came before it and remains one of the best examples of outside the box gameplay to date.

EDIT: Also Stalker and Penumbra. One is one of the most atmospheric survival experiences ever made, the other is probably the most terrifying thing I've ever played.

Mount&Blade, Victoria, Capitalism 2, and Sins of a Solar Empire leap to mind.

I'm surprised Planescape: Torment has only been mentioned once, since it's the very definition of 'cult classic'. I'd add Betrayal at Krondor and the Quest for Glory series to the list. Oh, and the Gabriel Knight series.

Gotta say, cult classic would have to be more than a couple years old to attain that status. You could say it was an underground hit, but classic implies that time has passed since it was released (unless it's Disney, apparently).

For instance, Army of Darkness is a cult classic. Grindhouse is not (at least not yet).

Gonna throw in Lost Kingdoms I and II on the Gamecube as my choices, along with Mother 3 (Earthbound a little bit less so, since everyone who knows how has played the game at this point). Grim Fandango and Full Throttle come to mind, as do things like Stubbs the Zombie and, I'm pretty sure, the Matt Hazard games.

Hmm......I'd really have to say Aidyn Chronicles because it is a wonderful RPG that not a lot of people know about. It was for the N64, and it had fun combat and a good story.....if I remember correctly because I haven't played it in about 10 years.
No offense, yo, but I think your nostalgia glasses are on. Played recently, it was a pretty idealistic game that took a wrong turn into rubbish. Story was mediocre, and combat, while an interesting tweak, was few and far between, everyone moved way too slow, and in order to get the best stuff, you had to run for an hour out of your way (and I do mean run, since there was almost no fast travel until really late in the game). And while the combat had an interesting premise, you were spaced too far from your enemy, making each battle take forever just because it too you so long to get there. The stat system was pretty decent, though.

Oh Gods, where to start? I am also seeing too many games that can't be called Cult Classics, one because they aren't exactly Cult, and some because they aren't that old, so can't be classic.. But I'll try and avoid that..

One I'm a little surprised not to see Monster Hunter, although really popular in Japan (but apparently waning a little over there) they're still releasing the new versions over here because of the cult following it has gained after the first. Think it's presence got a bit squashed by Shadow of the Collossus.

X-Com, Enemy Unknown, Terror from the Deep, and Apocalypse. A dominating force in the Squad Command genre, from what I know pretty much set the style for the genre. I still play today and all.

X-Com's spiritual successor; UFO and it's 2 sequels, still has a few people making mods for it.

The X universe of games

Definitely the Homeworld series, people are still, even now, making mods for number 2.

Vagrant Story. Still to this day has had one of the best antagonists I've seen.

StarTopia. An amazing game, so fun to play. Barely sold and caused Muckyfoot to close more or less. I blame Edios, they didn't give them any money for marketing and thus it hit the shelves without even a whisper. Luck it caught my eye (and ran on my old knackered rig at the time..) People should check it out if you like Dungeon Keeper and it's ilk.

I'm sure I'll think of more later..

I would say "Altered Beast" is a cult classic, man i love that game.

Even if it is ridiculously hard.
