Sauron. For obvious reasons, I think.
Actually...that depends on which form of Sauron you want, i mean having a big eye guard your house doesnt really do much good except for the fact that he can alert you, but i doubt an eye will do much good as defence if there were to be an invasion (for some reason)

One of the bosses from Metroid Prime on the gamecube. Preferably the giant daffodil that spits acid.

So, what monster, character, or enemy, would you want guarding your house at night
Clearly a T-1000. (Yes, technically from the movies, but he's also appeared in games.) Advantages include:

Doesn't slobber like Cerberus (three-headed dog from various games)
Doesn't need feeding, or make a mess on the carpet
Doesn't require virgin sacrifice or live in a lake of fire (like most demons / devils)
Doesn't make stains on the carpet.
Can do the housework if you ask it and won't complain, ever.
Has limited mastery of eighties slang if properly taught ("Talk to duh HAAAND!")

Disadvantages include:
Pretty gruesome-looking if damaged.
If there's on about that's on your side, there's probably a more advanced robotic killing machine that's looking to kill you. And while generally that machine won't succeed in doing so, it will succeed in killing all of your closest friends and family in order to imitate them and lure you into a trap. That's a really really bad thing.

The Maw. Or some Big Daddies (both Bouncer and Rosie), although Obex's Horned Reaper idea would be good as it would come with an army of minions.

Gravemind, or the Special Infected of L4D(2)
Either of your choices would have just as much interest in infecting/attacking you.
I think most people's choices would likely turn on their masters. LOL. Most feral monsters are hard to house train.

Yes, but there's a difference between feral monsters, and monsters that exist to infect other organisms.

100 times this, plus the agent from crackdown. And a few ninjas from Saints Row 2. Although they're not really monsters.

If it had to be a monster, I'd have the fast shrieking head crab zombies from half life 2.

I don't see such a distinction. Feral monsters will most likely kill you to eat you so they can survive and reproduce. The infectious variety are just skipping two steps. Actually they are skipping two fun steps; food and sex.

Noted, but there's still a distinction between more intelligent creatures, and what essentially boils down to zombies.

Oh! Those Hands from Zelda! The blue ones that take you back to the beginning of the cave. Completely foolproof.
