What happened to cheat codes?

I know some games still have em, but it seems most next gen games have left out those wonderful secret combination of buttons that turned your character blue or something.

They unlocked silly things, they provided superpowers or invincibility or a different model ect.

All in all they where fun, what happened to that?

Oh and I am talking mostly about console games, because the PC didn't really need em.

I grew out of them I guess, though I have to admit I loved the silly hats (such as full-sized submarines) they would have in Medal of Honour: Frontline.

playing GTA: San andreas I'd sometimes unlock a cheat while just playing the game. Maybe as games evolved we use more of the buttons and cheat codes just became a hassle.

They're still around. They're just called "console" these days.

They've been replaced with achievements and trophies or they're just silly little in-game cheats you earn.
