Apologies if I missed any threads in the past two weeks (busy playing DS3), but WTF happened to Gamefront? The so-named "sister site" to this one, it seems to be entirely gone. Wikipedia says it shut down on April 30th. What happened? What happened to all the files/mods/patches it hosted? It's strange how you never miss something until it's gone. I never went there, and now that I want to I can't.

Yea as you said they shut down last month. Last I heard the community over there had been working to archive all the stuff the site hosted but I have no idea where you'd go to access it now.

I imagine they shut down for the same reason huge layoffs hit The Escapist, Defy seems to be bleeding money at the moment

I think somebody on here said that some folks were moving as much stuff as they could over to Fileplanet, but I could be remembering that wrong.

Perhaps it's the danger of gaming and hosting sites. Things shut down. So many Neverwinter Nights mods are potentially lost to time since IGN seemingly shut down their vault (there is a new one that I've read may have all the old vault's contents on it). Filefront was a big force tho back in the day and it hosted many files for so many games.

We still have moddb and nexus (I paid for lifetime with that site) at least. Still, it's such a surprise to see it close so suddenly. What else do we still have? What else have we lost over the years? Gamespy was a year or two ago. I just checked Fileplanet as said above, banner at the top reads "Note: FilePlanet is no longer being updated and is in the process of being archived." o.o WTF is happening?

GameFront survives...kind of. Most of the files have been uploaded to http://gamefront.online/ (navigation is a *****, though), while what's left of the community has migrated to https://www.filesnation.com/

It is indeed a damn shame that the site was shuttered with no official attempt at preservation. A major portion of modding history would have been lost forever if it weren't for the passionate efforts of the community.

That first site, to my knowledge, has nothing to do with the GameFront staff and was set up by some somebody in Russia, so I would treat it with suspicion. The second site is currently yet to fully launch but has functioning forums, and as many GameFront profiles and threads moved over as was possible.

OT: More or less like the others have said, OP. DEFY struck again, sadly. There was interest from people at ModDB and other sites to try and save as many mods as possible, and I think they managed to get them all backed up on other sites in time. For all else, FilesNation is pretty much your place.
