You mean besides the spearhead of the FPS's popularity on the consoles, followed by the spearhead of the popularity of console online play?
The story is much better than most naysayers give it credit for and phenomenal if you include the expanded universe that comes with the books and other non-game stuff.
Plus it's incredibly fun. Not for everyone but neither is Half-life. I didn't like it. Doesn't mean it's not an amazing game though.
