I've done that (and my parents before me, and my paternal grandparents before them), and yeah, long day.I volunteered/worked at a polling place, and it's hard work. I had to be there from 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM; it was the hardest day in my life. I stood for a total of around 12 hours that day with breaks, of course. I once had a professor who worked from 5:30 AM to 1 AM. I have lots of respect for people who do this type of work every year, which I am planning on doing.

Apple or Able instead of Alpha, for example, and that's why it's Easy company in Band of Brothers, not Echo. Interestingly, various police groups in the US refused to standardise and still use their own different ones to this day.
