What I think makes a game great

I see allot of critics pick apart what makes a game bad but not allot of them talk about what makes a game good. My personal opinion on the subject can be listed in to separate lists essential and non-essential.

essential: every game needs to have at least one of these to be good and two to be great. However if a game fails in one these departments it will be noticed.

1. Fun gameplay: This is a no brainer but one thing people forget is the fun part. Yes some gameplay can be good but if its not fun people will be turned off. However if the gameplay is bad the fun part can save the game entirely. I think this is the pit that many RPGs fall in.

2. Good story: Also essential but this is the element most games and gamers tend to ignore in favor for number 1. But this is something that can save a game it can make gamers care about it and if it's strong gameplay can be crap and few would complain. The Final Fantasy all(or some *cough* VIII *cough*) have deep and complex plots and even Halo has one.
But their is a pitfall that allot of games, including the above mentioned, and especially story based ones tend fall into. Lack of...

3. Presentation AKA Immersion: This is the most neglected but most necessary part of any game. Presentation can save any game by helping immerse the player in it. A well presented game, like anything from Valve who are masters of this, can have a horrid or tired story and/or gameplay but can be hailed as the best game of all time, like Silent Hill 2 or even Half-Life (lets face it poor stories but expertly told ones.)
However if a game has great gameplay and a great story it can still suck if it's poorly presented.

Non-essentials: These are nice additions but cannot solely carry a game like those listed above.

1. Visuals and Audio: Their nice but not needed.

2. Playability: These are things like bugs and stuff if the don't break the game their fine.

3. Innovation: Think about it not every game needs something new to be good.

So there's my opinion. But What do you think makes a game great?

EDIT: for extra non existent points find a game that fits all of this criteria.

I've said it before and I've said it again.

A good game needs the following points:
1) Good gameplay
2) Good story

I can have point one without point two, but not point two without point one. I need to be able to enjoy the game first and foremost.

Ok, you've more or less just listed most of the positives so basically you're just stating the majority opinion.
So you agree?

I don't agree on not including audio. Great audio can turn a game from good to great. Necessary for the likes of racing games and rpgs.

That's true but you don't NEED it. It's nice but non-essential

I disagree again. The explosions, gun fire, engine noises, yada yada, needs to be well executed, therefore necessary for a game like Modern Warfare or Motorstorm to be good. Without it, it would not be good.

Story is essential for certain genres, but I'll take audio over story any day when it comes to a shooter like Modern Warfare.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Except the way you make a game GREAT is having both. Though I suppose a point 2 would vary from person to person, it shouldn't be that hard to do for individual preference and genres.

A solid gameplay is more or less all I need.

Good story is a bonus, but its only movies I won't let get away with bad storylines.

I think it really depends on the genre. Solid gameplay is always necessary, but games like puzzles, stuff meant to be addicting rather than immersive, don't need good storyline, or good characters.

All I care about is the gameplay. Anything else doesn't matter as long as it's fun. Even terrible games can be fun for their comedic value. This is demonstrated in my beautifully drawn graph:

Sounds like you think EVERYTHING is what makes a good game...

Story. I will forgive anything as long as I get to find out what happens next.

It doesn't matter what you're bringing to the table, if there's no story, I'm just not interested. This is what happened to me with Crackdown. I adore the game, but as much as I love the zany action of it, I never finished it and have no real intention of going back or playing the sequel

case in point - Thief: Deadly Shadows

it ditched the open level design and rope arrow freedom from the previous two games in favor of a much more linear approach (this was not the best decision); but, the fantastic audio redeemed this game and gave it its best level - Shalebridge Cradle. Audio is necessary for atmosphere creation, even more so than graphics. Any of the thief games are a testament to that.

I still find myself humming music from Diablo 2 occasionally.

Anyway, to make a post on topic, something that makes a game great is that it doesn't punish you for playing it. It's something that i've seen popping up more and more lately. Why would you do that? Seems like a terrible idea, and yet it happens.
