What if drugs were legalised?

The government would develop uber drugs to keep the population under control, totally addicted and all the while paying their drug tax hand over fist for their daily dosage allowance!

If we legalized drugs, we'd undercut the major drug lords, getting rid of a huge amount of their money and we wouldn't be arresting non-violent drug users and letting out real criminals to do it. Judging by what other countries that have legalized drugs, we'd see more people using drugs openly, but the overall drug abuse would actually drop.

The country would become pretty terrible since, you know, everyone would start doing drugs. So basically, if all drugs are legalised, my country (the US) would become one of the shittiest places on Earth.

There would be a lot of celebration, as well as a lot of protest.

There would be more drug related tax and government revenue, and less drug related crime. That alone would probably grant the government billions yearly.

There would be less incentive for people to try drugs as they're not taboo anymore.

Marijuana would FINALLY get some *real* government testing that doesn't just purposely half ass it in order to come to the conclusion of:

"MARIJUANA IS BAD AND WILL KILL YOU!!!!!!!!!1!1!!!!1111ONE!!!!"

We'd finally be able to stop sitting through those "Drugs are bad, don't do drugs mmmkay?" seminars in school.

Every church in (I'm assuming you're from America) America would be pissed as hell and assume that they'll now be forced to live in a ghetto by default of drug availability.

General misunderstanding of drugs will finally stop, people will be forced to listen to the fact that not all drugs are immediately bad and that some drugs (*Ahem* WEED) are even beneficial to human function.

And yes, if you haven't already guessed, I would support the legalization and controlled distribution by certified people; of drugs. Especially Mary Jane, because she's just insane!

In 2001 Portugal made all drugs legal.
I heard about this. Although technically they weren't made legal, just decriminalized. The difference being that it was legal to use, and produce for personal use, but illegal to sell drugs.

Could you have asked a more vague question?

Are you referring to any one drug in particular?

Just the harmless drugs like marijuana? Or the dangerous stuff too (meth, cocaine, etc)?

And if the latter, what sort of Orwellian dystopia are we living in? And wouldn't there then be larger issues to worry about?
pot isn't harmful or harmless. there just isn't enough scientific study to say one or the other. its VERY hard to research pot and had garnered protest among the scientific community.

I support decriminalization, but just because MJ is less harmful than tobacco and alcohol, doesn't mean its harmless.

Your quoted poster is correct, there is a void of research into the drug because of it's legal status. The same can be said of many other recreational drugs (such as LSD, which studies have shown could be one of the few effective treatments for severe cluster headaches).
