It would be some sort of cult series that has an underground following of fan-translators. Kind of like how it is now, but on a minimal more unspoken of scale. It wouldn't be discovered properly until you dug up info on the internet and would be one of those things that becomes fairly popular years later.
Also, the fans would constantly get petitions and letters together to call for an english release.
Also, there would still be as much fan hentai and fiction as there is today, if not more.
EDIT: Also, why does every FF discussion that pops up have to have accusations of fanboyism and people that go out of their way to hate it? I see the same thing with Halo and other popular games, I wish people would just shut up about it and admit that maybe, just maybe... They have different tastes.
