I double checked the rules before I decided to post this and im pretty sure its fine.. It shouldnt be considered offending people using vulgar language im simply interested in what vulgar word(s) people consider to be the most offensive in the english language.. However if Im wrong and this does violate that rule I throw myself upon the mercy of the moderators now.

If you are easily offended please dont read on.

I got to thinking about this after watching Stephen frys "Planet Word"

Words like f*ck and shit dont really come across as offensive to me at all (depending on how they are used) I think the worst words would have to be n***er and to a lesser extent c*nt but I could never really bring myself to use that first one and I dont think I ever really have.. Theres not really any situation where theres a reasonable excuse to use it but I find it weird that if another person of african decent uses it its perfectly acceptable which is obviously due to an irony factor aswell as another way of saying "brother" which sounds stereotypical but hey, its actually the case.

'C**t' comes to mind, it's the only word on TV that's censored on all channels, I think.

'N****r' really depends on how you mean it. Some people use 'nigga' as a greeting, but 'n****r' is mostly used as an insult.

I don't find any word inherently offensive. Words are just collections of syllables. When you use the words in a certain context with certain intent is when the become offensive. In that situation it doesn't really matter what word you use specifically.

For the majority? ****. For me, it's 'Electronic Arts' or their logo.

I also forgot. These words when said one after the other in any order: heterosexual white male.

Anti-intellectualism. I suppose that word describes what I'm offended about, though.

So I'll settle for my second best: "them."

Yup, the pronoun. To me it's the most offensive because it automatically precludes any type of dialogue the moment it's mentioned in today's current linguistic environment.

I'm not quite sure what I find personally offensive, when I joke with my friends it's normally a game of lets see who can be the most offensive, I'm rarely put in a scenario where someone is genuinly trying to cause offense.

But, I think the major ones for most people are either racial, homophobic slurs or c**t.

One word that does slightly grate me when used offensively is 'smart', like it's something bad. Luckily as a complete dumbass who only aspires to be smart this has never been used against me, but i'm offended for the person.

Why is it in these threads about curse words people start censoring themselves when they never bother in any other thread? Surely this is the least offensive context it's possible to use the words in.

I find the word "offensive" offensive. I mean, its so offensive, that the word itself is offensive!

On a more serious note, probably the c-word. That's probably the one word I couldn't say. I really don't swear, so you probably won't ever hear (see?) me use the f-word or s-word, but I could probably say them in an acting scenario or something. Not so with c-word. I think I would feel dirty after saying it.

I find the words good and evil, and the very concepts they are founded on, to be the worst words ever invented by man.

"****" is pretty much the only word I feel is truly offensive nowadays, barring racial slurs.

As for racial slurs.. well, those are very relative in how offensive they are. Depends on how it's said and how offended the other party would be. But "****" is pretty much 100% offensive, no matter how you look at it.

It's also one of the few I actually wouldn't use against someone.

Assuming we're not counting racial slurs because it'd be to obvious, I suppose **** takes the cake. Fuck is way to common and versatile to be to offensive anymore and **** is such a verbally harsh word it aids in it's offensiveness.

The only word I personally get offended by is 'liar'. If there is one thing on this earth you should not call me, it's that.

"Republican"

It just has so many negative things that go along with it so I avoid the word when I can.

Silence. More of a state really, I mean the word silence isn't offensive but sitting in silence is. You have a tongue and can make sounds, do so!

Seriously. I hate silence.
