A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do... All that matters is taking matters into your own hands...

Quotes aside, a man is a biologically male member of the human species. Yes, I'm very literal- minded.

All right, a man is also a miserable pile of secrets.

Panting and sweating as you run through the corridors, how can you challenge a perfect immortal machine?
Technically that should be my corridors, but I'll let that slide given you actually knew the reference, therefore yay you!

It's a disheartening thought that there are people out there who do not know of Shodan. Makes me feel old...

A human with a penis. If we're talking humans in general, it should have thumbs, be able to stand on two legs, and use logic.

LOL I forgot it was suppose to be "my corridors" and truth be told I heard about System Shock through Yatzhees review of Bioshock and looked it up and now I'm hunting down for a copy.

Something that has reached sexual and mental maturity and happens to have a Y chromosome and is of the homo sapien.

It however is possible to have this status revoked for the lack of mental maturity. Thence, the term, "man-child" came to be.

Is that you, SHODAN? :D

Anyway, i think people took this thread the wrong way. I think the author meant man as "human being", though i could be wrong. Sorry if i am.

Dear god the etymological fallacy (wikipedia that shit) in this thread. Also, Old English VERY CERTAINLY had terms for both man and woman and in fact had idiosyncratic gender marked on EVERY noun.

That said, a man is a social construct with a large constellation of defining features. A MALE is someone with an X and a Y chromosome. Different things.

A man is a male human that contributes more to his civilization's well being than he detracts from it. Anything less can not truly be called a man.

That may depend. While the presence of a Y chromosome in the set of sex chromosomes almost always yields a male, there are numerous cases that say otherwise. There may be a female who has both an X and a Y, but is phenotypically female because her Y chromosome is lacking the "sex-determining region Y" (SRY) which codes for for the "testis-determining factor" (TDF), a protein that forms undifferentiated embryonic gonadal tissue into testes.

Conversely, there can also be a male with two X chromosomes as one of their X chromosomes has the SRY on it, presumably due to an error in crossing-over during meiosis.

As for the thing about reaching adulthood, that sounds right.
