I've been downloading some mods for gmod, and have come accross something called an SVN.

I have been told that they "give you the latest version of the mod". But couldn't you just download it anyway?

I have googled and it only gives general explanations that I don't understand

Ok. Have the admins blocked all access to my topics? The last 3 I have made, asking for help on Gmod and talking about half life 2, have recieved no posts!

I'm worried

Hold your horses friend, bumping your topic so quickly is generally frowned upon. This forum simply sees a lot of replies in a short amount of time, a topic can sink away in the flood sometimes.

That said, I'm not sure if I can help you, but a little more detail would be nice. Can't you just buy Gmod of Steam?

An SVN is something that automatically updates things. In your case, it automatically updates addons for Garry's Mod.

It requires an SVN client, TortiseSVN [http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/] is a good SVN client. You should probably be asking these questions on Facepunch.

SVN is an abbreviation for Subversion, a version control system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_(software)

The mod team stores everything they do in their version control system. As soon as an individual developer gets something done, it goes in there. Only when they have done a substantial enough amount of work to warrant a "release", they package (and hopefully test) the thing and put it up for the general public to download. The in-between versions are not made available that way, which is why your only choice is to pull them from SVN yourself if you want them.

Well the SVN certainly works that way and especially for Gmod. Many mod and model packs are released through SVN since it gives easier updating and upgrading of mods you have installed esp for spacecraft and rp mods.

Certainly useful since there are many mods that require other mods to wokr and getting an SVN client to do it for you streamlines everything.

I might try one out. If it really does make things much easier...how do you mean? Does it list your mods, and you can click to update...could you please explain further the actual functionality of an SVN client?

Thanks loads by the way

I believe I post a very nice guide to installing Wire on one of your other threads. Did you see it?
OT, SVN allows you to have absolutely the latest version of whatever. As soon as the devs update (but before they actually upload the entire mod again) your SVN client can grab it and update your mod. This allows bugs to be continually fixed, when normally you would have to wait for a patch to be uploaded.
