It's the term given to the day after thanksgiving where all the stores have real big discounts on their stuff and everybody rushes to get them.

It's the day before Thanksgiving (still don't know the point of that) apparently.

Friday after thanksgiving, big sales everywhere, stores opening extra early. I... forget why it's called Black Friday though.

Day after Thanksgiving actually. It marks the beginning of the holiday sales season for retailers because it means there is usually about a month of hard shopping for Christmas. So they start things off with a bang with early morning sales and such to bring attention to their stores.

I think it's called Black Friday because it's a day when rampant mass consumerism and greed take hold and everything that is wrong with society is allowed to seep to the forefront.
Or maybe that's something I made up just now, I can't remember.

The day of the year when everyone flocks to commercial establishments with the intent of purchasing their holiday gifts at "uniquely" low prices at the expense of everyone else around them (often to the extreme of physical and verbal violence). This results in everyone returning home tired, cranky, disheveled, and often unsatisfied. I, personally, prefer to spend this so-called holiday as far as humanly possible from other, less-sane, members of the human race.

It's a day when I have to go to work while the majority of my co-citizens get to stay home, or shop if they go that way.

Not to bash wikipedia, but it is user-built. The Black in Black Friday is all about accounting and debit/credit columns, with Red=Debit and Black=Credit. Most shops make the bulk of their profits this time of year. Or is it when the little gray men jump out of the 14th floor windows?

Edit - we've a new internet-y phrase too (iPhrase?) - Black Monday. As the majority of the US is off today, Monday is when most office-workers will start their online holiday shopping sprees.

I think someone should edit the Wiki page with that...

It's called black Friday because, before company's where in the "Red" in sales the whole year and on Black Friday they finally got out of the "Red" and went into the "Black" which is a good thing.

It is quite insane, some people have even were trampled and died in the crowds. Or at least a few years ago it was big news.

Being an Albertan Canadian I just know of it as July 31, 1987. In Alberta Edmonton was hit with an F5 Tornado.

If you're talking about the States i think it is some Thanksgiving sale.
