What is emo?

One of my friends was listening to a band called hawthorne heights, and they are definitely emo. lol.

If you had to ask me what 'emo' music is, then they are prime examples.

Bascially, more 'fashion' bands than musically talented or unique...
Black Veil Brides are another example, i.m.o.
...basically, stuff where 12 year old girls are like OMG THIS BAND IS SO KEWL DEY R SO HAAAAWWWTT<3<3<3 XXXXX...if that makes sense.

Meh, I personally don't think it can be used as a stereotype for people though; everyone's emotional, right...?

Just because I wear skinny jeans and other things that are stereotypically 'emo' or 'scene' such as my hair or generally hated music taste, doesn't mean I slit my wrists and whatever...

Meh, if other teenagers enjoy shouting that at me, and many other people, then good for them I suppose...a label is a label and people are always gonna hate if your different from them, just a fact of life:]

I dunno people have called me emo before because I wear a lot of dark colors and am very silent... though I don't consider myself emo... even if I am fairly emotionally unstable and I do tend to cut every so often...<.<

But... But... you perfectly described an emo person when you were describing yourself! If you would indulge me, why do you cut yourself? I will understand if you choose not to answer.
OT: I have been called emo. I then hurt people. Then they complain about that pain, and I call them emo. I love life, and anyone who thinks their life is "hard" needs to live in the Middle East or fucking South Africa for a day, then compare.
