Flirting is just foreplay you can (potentially) get away with in mixed company, with the added wrinkle that it is often not consensual.
If I observe a bubbling undercurrent of sexuality, then to me it is flirting.

For me its just another form of conversation. :/
Of course it CAN be used as a method of expressing genuine sexual attraction with someone and showing them subtly that you're trying to act on that.
But most of the time if I flirt, I'm flirting with my friends playfully; friends I'm physically attracted to and even friends I'm not. Flirting is fun for both people, I try not to be so stuck up about things and as long as the other person knows me well enough to know it's only fun and not take it too seriously it's pretty much just having a laugh.

Hard to say. Flirting is ambiguous and supposed to be difficult to pick up on by the nature of its intent (just for that one person, *wink wink* *nudge nudge*).
Without cheating by using a dictionary, my personal definition is interpersonal behavior displaying that you have the intent to start a sexual relationship at some point in the future directed at the intended recipient of the said behavior, regardless of whether it actually happens or not. Essentially it's the "pre-dating/sex" phase of a relationship.

Anything can be taken in a flirty manner though, and flirting can be subtle, obvious or completely weird in its nature.
But yeah for me it is just that hint that something more may come if you talk to this person more. Although again not always - some people use flirting as a game for their own amusement.
