I was born and raised in West Yorkshire in a working class family... yet I have an almost stereotypical British accent. You know, top hat, monocle and all that.

I knew you werent British! You lying buttmunch! Go back to the gun control thread and admit to everyone that you arent British, just a lying turd.
Well, you don't have to be British accent if you're British.

Someone in my form at college is an American citizen but has a strong English accent.
He is technically American.

Hahahahaha, no. Speaking as an Australian, we don't idolize the stereotype accent. I can say that the broad Australian accent is quite possibly worse then southern drawl and on par with cockney. He could still be British.

I could listen to Stephen Fry read the back of cereal boxes for hours.

I love British accents.
Yeah I like Stephen Fry's voice. But thats more peoples voices than accents. I like Martin Sheens voice too.
Also just for the record I am not gay before anyone jumps to that conclusion.
Haha, even so, the voices are much more charming than my boring American accent. I'm not gay either, but I would still marry Stephen Fry just for the conversations by the fireplace.~~

Can't go wrong with Martin Sheen either,

So my girlfriends American friends always tell me how cute my British accent is (even though it isn't a "stereotypical" Londoner's accent), but I was just wondering what it is that American girls find so attractive about them...
In the US media the British-accented guys are always a mix of intelligent, suave, adventurous, or the bad guy. Or even all of the above. Can you really blame them? We are all James Bond, Eames, or any number of awesome, sweep-you-off-your-feet romantic adventurous types. We're just that awesome.

At least, that's what I think causes it. I don't mind all that much, to be honest.

My personal accent is a mix of Hagrid and Hermione, weirdly. Depending on my constitution and my surroundings at my time of speaking.

It's very fluid. I often mirror the person I'm speaking to without realising, which can be rather offensive if I do it poorly. >.>

I'm from Yorkshire, so I'm not proud of my accent. Whenever I talk to people from places like London, they act like I have an IQ of around 70 because I talk like a farmer from 'up north'.

I don't know about other Americans, but my impression has always been the English in general have the most elegant accent (sure there's more than one variety, but to an American's ear, don't expect him/her to know which side of London it comes from...lol). Most American accents sound dry and plain (except the southern accent), so the English accent comes across as more attractive.

For instance I'm attracted to girls with English accents.

But then again there's the whole exotic factor that makes every accent attractive to the unfamiliarized ear. Of course unless we're talking about some accents that really manage to gut the English language like....well I don't want to start with the insults...lol

Whenever they say British its some English accent, no one likes the welsh :(
I think the Welsh accent is great. One of my friends moved to Wales and we tease her now because he accent has completely changed from her posh private-school accent to a full on Welsh accent.

I suppose what I mean by the British accent is the one always portrayed on American TV.

A good example is Angelina Jolie's British accent in films like Tomb Raider.
My accent obviously isn't a sexy "Hello Boys" accent, but that would be a typical British accent in my opinion.
You say typical but I've never met anyone who speaks like that. I don't think there is a typical British accent.

Just a 'normal' one?
From the South East, so not Liverpool or Scouse, or Brummy.

I suppose its 'normal' for me, I don't know what a typical British accent would be like?

There is no such thing as a stereotypical British accent! Britain has one of the highest number of dialects (in relation to distance travelled) in the world. Go 20 miles in either direction and you'll find the accent is very different.

OT: I have no idea what so ever, but I wouldn't complain.

Considering just how many different accents there are in Britain, this question is relatively meaningless, except to raise the question of what recording examples of all known accents from Britain and digitally collating them into one voice would sound like.
Well of course there is BBC English, which is the closet thing we have to a standard. Though its not so consistent these days as a lot of local shows have presenters with local accents, plus there has been something of a boom in media popularity of welsh, Northern Irish, and Scottish accents in the last few years.

Once again I'd have to say BBC English, that at least has contributed to the overseas view of the British accent.

I could just as easily say "What is it with the Irish accent?"
One of my English friends says that it's the most eargasmic accent she's ever heard.
Apparently the English love it.

There isn't really such a thing as a "British" accent, though. Or at least, not in the same way as, say, a French accent, which results from the language differences, so most people who speak French as their first language tend to have a similar way of speaking English. (not necessarily "getting it wrong", but tending towards grammatical structures that are more like the French ones)

I'm from North Yorkshire and have a mix of the local northern accent and disgusting southerner accent.

The combination results in a smooth, trustworthy accent that would probably get me laid quite often if I was actually a likeable person.

If I couldn't get Morgan Freeman or Seananners to read me the back of cereal boxes, I'd get a British guy. Just sayin'.
