Alpha costs money. He can play the free version on his browser if he wishes to try out the game in it's most simplistic form.

About 2/3 of what Minecraft is about is in the title. You mine, you craft, and you build.
The game is only as boring as you make it, even if your not into building stuff you can still play other peoples worlds that they have made.

It's like legos. Build what you want, however you must get the materials first while fending off monsters.

It's a sandbox game centered around exploring, collecting resources, and utilizing those resources in the creation of fantastical structures and in your character's survival, because monsters come out at night. This all takes place in a world made completely out of boxes.

It's still a young game (still in alpha) and is being actively developed by the programmer Notch and his associates at Mojang Specifications.
