The "normal majority" also has deviating thoughts and opinions that they usually do not share or act on (usually, not always) simply out of fear of social backlash.
People wear masks in their every day life; as a people, we are generally too insecure to admit to the world who we really are, because we fear someone out there will take advantage of that.
Personally I really liked Dr. Phil's deffinition(brave with me):
"Normal is when what you do that sets you apart doesn't interfere with the rest of your life. If it is a problem for you in normal-life, then it isn't normal."
Opinions on Dr. Phil aside, that's something I always liked. Normal is relative to you and nothing else. Majority doesn't actually dictate normality. Conformists on the other hand dictate a perseved notion of what normality should or shouldn't be. That's a completely different subject-matter though.
Normal is whatever the average is. One second it could be sitting peacefully reading a book. The next it could be running butt-naked through the streets painted purple. There is no overall "normal", there are only normals within a given situation. And normal isn't always good. Sometimes its good to be weird. *Manic giggling*
According to psychiatry pretty much anything that fits within the bound of socially acceptable behaviour is considered normal. To make a crappy ASCII representation since im too lazy to draw it:
Code:
|..................... Upper limit of normality
|--------------------- Average behaviour
|..................... Lower limit of normality
Anything between upper and lower limits is considered normal. Usually it's displayed as a curve that often goes slightly above or slightly below the average. Mild depressions are close to lower limit while mild euphoric states are close to upper limit. Beyond them is the land of clinical cases and serious mental issues also known as the fun times.
